Slax development restarted

Last Slax version was released many years ago. I didn't have resources to work on Slax any longer. But just yesterday, I've signed a contract with P&P Software GmbH and wisol technologie GmbH. Thanks to these two companies, I'm funded now to work on Slax fulltime (or, at least, 90% time, since I still keep my ongoing business, which needs some minimal maintenance).

The contract states, among others, the following: Slax will be updated to the latest versions of all sofrware components, and final release of Slax 7 will be released within 4 months.

Thus, it should be ready before christmas! :)
I will post my progress on this blog.

lk 2012-08-28 04:18

Hi Tom, do you have allways suported KDE3 line?, i mean Trinity? i read something that you want switch to KDE4, but more folks like me are classic kde3 lovers :D

Tomas M 2012-08-28 04:20

I plan to switch to KDE 4.
But I think that when I have Slax 7 kernel ready, I could perhaps try to release Slax 6.6.6 or something like that, with new kernel but all the old stuff :)

jm 2012-08-28 06:00

Slax 6.6.6, sounds promising. And the version is easy to remember :)

slax users since version 4 2012-08-28 07:28

Sorry dude but we use porteus now. How will you convince us to switch back to slax? Maybe after releasing slax 7 you will orphan it again? Slax is one man project and it's bad as we suffer when it becomes an orphan.

Tomas M 2012-08-28 09:01

I can understand your frustration.

jm 2012-08-28 23:03

@slax users since version 4

Tomas M may understand your frustration, me - not so much.

It is not cool to read posts like yours!
It may be the way you feel, but does that mean you have forgotten all the good stuff and that Porteus started as Slax-remix ? (Do I hear you saying thanks, Tomas M, along with your criticism ?)

So, someone shares with us results of his work for years, shares good solutions, leaves documentation, develops community, does the tons of other good stuff, and all you are sharing now is your own disappointment that for some reason all that good stuff was discontinuet for some time ?

And you are sharing this, that way ? Thank you, but no, thank you!

Alex 2012-08-29 05:31

Slax is very good 6.1.2. is beautifull and simple , good system

bolid 2012-08-29 06:46

Porteus have many conflict with old aplication.
Slax simple to use.
I used slax 2- years and every day.
But I think, slax need to update.
SLAX living now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bolid 2012-08-29 07:24

Porteus is modern but very raw system.
I have tried Porteus and returned to Slax.
Aplications which required for me do not work in Porteus.
Appears choice that it is important contemporaneity or work.
I choose - work.
And I choose ---- SLAX!!!!!!!!!!!

sinus 2012-08-30 00:03

"Porteus is modern but very raw system.

Slax gave birth to many off spring. The next slax will evolve in the same way all forks are evolving. It will be heavier, slower and have the same characteristics as the up to date forks. That's called progress!

kiftox 2012-09-01 10:00

slax has been good enough to be remembered as one of the best portable OS until its reborn..(I've never heard about porteus here in Spain)
I think this man deserves (much) more respect, he has given a lot of his time & his effort to the comunity without asking anything back...in a fair world, people like him should be considered HEROES.

alejandro 2012-09-01 14:42

i used slax since the "popcorn" days. one suggestion is changing the window manager to something simple such as fluxbox. gnome, kde, possibly lxde will become unmanageable over time. xcfe is possible. however, fluxbox does well. mplayer and smplayer is more efficient. libreoffice which includes base will be important. a web server, email server, directory server, and a telephony server will round out the distro. i am using openbsd 5.1 with and without windows on a flashdrive. this distro is highly efficient. puppy linux slacko is a good distro. in my opinion having a strong desktop with printer and scanner and web servers operating is the best approach. i do not get into flame wars. i am of the opinion that all distros have a place depending on what the problem is at hand.

I am very happy for you to have the support of P&P and Wisol folks [ Hi! Thanks for supporting Tomas + Slax ] we should thank them also.

This is certainly a good day for me to read such good news looks like fun days are ahead again [ remember when Patrick forced name change :)]. It may be start of Autumn if one looks at trees in park but spring is upon SLAX.
