madwifi problem solved !(?)

Atheros WIFI chipsets caused head acke and many wasted hours ending with no success specially trying to use new chipsets, like 5006/5007/...

Now the latest madwifi diver offers a unified solution for both old and new chipsets. I integrated it to SLAX 6.0.7 instead of making a simple module to eliminate conflicts with old madwifi. Download it from

ftp://ftp.hasix.org/LINUX/SLAX6/modules/001-core-madwifihal20080815-067.lzm

and replace the original 001-core.lzm with this module.

Type in a terminal window

iwconfig

If everything goes well you must see ath0 interface listed with the current parameters.

Type

wlanconfig ath0 list scan

in the terminal window to list available networks.

Now you can use the usual WLAN tools to set up encryption method and key, connect to network, etc.

If you are not familiar with madwifi, read

http://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/FirstTimeHowTo

Setting up a client using WPA-PSK you need wpa_supplicant

ftp://ftp.hasix.org/LINUX/SLAX6/modules/wpa_supplicant-0.5.10-i486-1.lzm

I tried this module on the mini-PC acer aspire one. After boot, looking with lsmod, the modules ath_pci,ath_hal and wlan are mounted. However, iwconfig does not show any interface (ath0 or whatever).

Hi,

I use version 6.08 and it runs really good with the acer aspire one. But I tried to use the
ftp://ftp.hasix.org/LINUX/SLAX6/modules/001-core-madwifihal20080815-067.lzm
file (renamed to oo1-core.lzm). Now it is impossible to start slax: It hangs while starting the x-server. Same problem with the 'new'-version.

Is there a solution, because the 6.07 does not run with my aspire one.

Thanks

Alois

I have had simular issue not sure why. My bios also corrupted at one point (acer has bios issues not slax). I would love to run slax but I am in the same boat, hangs at boot.

ftp://ftp.hasix.org/LINUX/SLAX6/modules/001-core-madwifihal20080815-067.lzm is for SLAX with 2.6.24.5 Kernel, like 6.0.7 and not compatible with 6.0.8 which comes with a different 2.6.26 Kernel. Modules (drivers) are Kernel version dependend you so can't mix them. In you case yor systems lost not only madwifi but all basic modules like files system drivers, etc. therefore can't work.

Solution: reinstall original 001-core

my issue is I cannot change core on any version of slax and expect it to boot on the aspire one. its me wanting wifi making me change cores. I have done 607 and 608 rc4 and rc6 and tried changing the core with the latest madwifi supplied in this thread. the unit locks at boot.
I am sure in time this will work out.

on a side note
"Stinky wrote:...Is there a solution, because the 6.07 does not run with my aspire one..." this is me quoting another user, it isnt not me making the statement.

media:/sda1/slax/base is the directory for the core lzm in slax from a thumb drive

media:/hdc/slax/base is the directory for the core lzm in slax from a cd

SLAXROCKS: I would like to say thanks for telling me that. I replaced the module.

HOWEVER: It isn't working. I went into command line after replacing and i see nothing.

this is all i get.

root@slax:~# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

Im really stuck. I know I have an atheros wifi chipset, But this isnt working.

Ok... It's working now. But for some reason I cant bring up the GUI that lets me select wireless networks. But oh well, I can't complain at least I got this far. I found success by loading Slax FRESH, I dont know what that means. But since I have to redo another partition of SLAX, I will automatically replace the existing module before I boot up the fresh copy.

ok this is strange. After replacing the core-001-lzm module with the newer version and rebooting slax, the kernel only loads into text mode and says the system is read only. I figure something is not right, and traced the problem to the module.

Any Ideas?

why don't you or anyone else copy the build script(slaxbuild) and just create the module in the meantime. Mbl has been busy, but he does great work :)

I know he does great work that is one of the main reason why we would like him to do it. I do not know how to make the wireless drivers to work. i have look at things like http://snapshots.madwifi-project.org/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6/ ,etc. I would really like if he could create the module or even just tell us how he did it then we can create a new version every time a new kernel version comes out.
I do not know how he did it but i would like to know how. if any one know his email and could email him asking him how he did it or if he could create a new module for it, please do. I would like it a lot.
