Slax 6.1.0 is released

Hello all.

I've been a bit busy (as usual) and it will be the same for the following few weeks, I'm building a new house and I have to be there everyday. You know, the working-men are unpredictable and they require continuous supervision in order to make things correctly.

Despite the lack of time, I was able to push out Slax 6.1, which is mainly a maintenance release (aiming to cleanup some logical issues with splitted base modules). The 'Build Slax' feature should be now working (logically) better than before, since it is possible to exclude KDE modules and the created Slax will be still usable with pure X (using FluxBox as default).

I noticed few requests for kernel upgrade, since currently it has the same configuration like in the previous version 6.0.9 - the kernel is 2.6.27.8. I think it is possible, please describe to me what changes do you need, send it using "Contact" link in my blog (see the footer of this webpage). But do not only tell me 'enable this' or 'disable that'... rather precisely explain what needs to be done step by step, that will significantly increase the chances that your suggestion will be accepted.

Anyway, the kernel version will remain the same (2.6.27.x) for Slax 6.x. As you perhaps noticed, squashfs has been accepted to mainline kernel (2.6.29). I am not willing to pay for my own LZMA patches this time, I choose to wait instead; it (lzma) will eventually appear in mainline sooner or later, so there will be no kernel update in Slax unless official LZMA is mainlined and supported by squashfs.

Slax 6 is now over. Only bugfixes or small improvements should be implemented, the focus is now on Slax 7, which will contain KDE 4 and newest kernel. This will take some long time I guess.

Thank you all for using Slax!
By the way: Slax 6.0.9 has been downloaded by about 201000 users. Thanks again!

I saw in one of the posts that U3 formatted devices can't be fully utilised. I think the "multiple lun" option has to be enabled in kernel under scsi menu.

Quote: "Anyway, up to 6.0.9 I still cannot use this feature with Slax: it insists that any such drive can only be a cdrom without additional storage in the remaining space. Even when it's booted properly from a real cdrom and given such a combo pendrive to mount, Slax only recognizes the first lun (logical unit number). This doesn't seem to happen in Kubuntu which has no problem mounting both "devices" and any partitions within. I'd hazard a guess it has to do with HAL but i'm an absolute idiot when it comes to kernel and device driver tweaking :)"

I think this should solve multiple USB-boot problems popping up in the forums.

Thanks for letting us enjoy Slax!

Tomas, I've built a kernel 2.6.29 without lzma and I can say the modules will have their size increased around 10%... but I will very soon change my kernel for this 2.6.29 despite the lack of lzma support.

Great! Thank You !

PS: Will wait for localization 6.1.0 modules (and ukrainian too).
PPS: 6.0.9 (with removed X) - some time all network services die, but nat-networking still live. I don't understand why, and had not prepare complete bug-report. :(

Can we have a "remove modules" function in the "build slax" section?
In fact, I only want "Slax Core"+"Slax Xorg", so I would like to build one by removing the others.

Thanks, Tomas.

I need the EXT4 support, while it's announced that EXT4 is not stable till kernel 2.6.28.
I've builded kernel by myself, but it did't go well with slax 6.0.9.
how could I get newer kernel?

The kernel version has not changed, and a few libraries have been upgraded (according to the changelog).
Unless the module requires a specific library version it should continue to work fine under 6.1.0 .

Some comments about Slax 6.1.0.

1) Not all modules for Slax 6.0.9 work, kernel dependent ones do though, since it is the same kernel.
2) Not all the modules that exist will be incorporated into slax(kalem), this is impossible and does not make sense, (Not even the big guys do it, though they are trying :) ), if you want something put into Slax contact Tomas and tell him how to do it and your proposal might make its way into Slax :), this way everybody wins!, if not then we're back at square 1.
3) YY, I am with you, however, with the kernel version at the same place 2.6.27.8, it is of no USE to have EXT4 support, we will hopefully see it when Slax 7 is released with kernel >= 2.6.29.X
4) Slax default wallpaper was changed from shoes to a map of the World that states "The World is Open Source", I like it! Not that I did not like the other one, but this one is nice :)
5) Some of the working modules that I had, do not work correctly, guess I will have to rebuild them in Slax 6.1 when I have a chance. For instance I tried to update xine-lib module to latest xine-lib-1.1.16.3 or so, and the module suppossedly gets created, but when I also build xine-ui, it dies quickly so I left the old one back?, will try to figure out what went wrong or how Slax has changed to fix it.
6) xconf worked better in Slax 6.0.9, created a HorizSync and VertRefresh line for a Toshiba TV with PC input that I had, with Slax 6.1 it does not give me the nice values that it did before and the screen flickers once in a while.

Other than that, thank you Tomas for making and sharing Slax with everyone that wants to use and enjoy it :)

just as a FYI type post, perhaps there is a incentive to try and add newer support for 2.6.28/2.6.29

610 running in a frugal install here for ~36 hours, seems completely nominal. I just copied all my 609 added apps modules and config modules and booted it up with grub, looks and feels just like 609.

I truly dread going to kde 4.++, do not like what I see. Is anything going to happen to slax that would preclude me from replacing the 4.+ with a 3.5.10 KDE?

Yet LZMA is part of the next 2.6.30 kernel. Not sure if squafs-lzma will be there, but it will be possible kernel itself compressed by lzma.

excerpt of http://lwn.net/Articles/325485/

Support for compressing the kernel with the bzip2 or lzma algorithms has been added. Support for the old zImage format has been removed.

perhaps someones able to build a module for the IPv6 Gateway6 Client built from the latest code here http://go6.net/4105/download.asp would be most welcome.

i think it would be a really good thing if we all had an open IPv6 tunnel were we could boot our slax servers off USB and start to built a generic SLAX ipv6 virtual open community LAN.

There is a new Slax version 6.1.1, saw it at Distrowatch.com on Left Side, Latest Distributions. Maybe bugfix release with 6.1.0?, sorry for pointing it out if anybody gets mad.

http://distrowatch.com/

ftp://ftp.slax.org/SLAX-6.x/slax-6.1.1.iso

Changelog:
6.1.1

- fixed handling of SATA devices by compiling IDE_GENERIC driver as a module
instead putting it inside the kernel directly
- added support for some ATHEROS and IWLWIFI devices
- ocfs is now compiled as a kernel module since I was told it's better that way
- upgraded Flash Player plugin to version 9.0.159

Happy Slaxing!

yes CONFIG_ATH5K=m CONFIG_ATH9K=m CONFIG_IWL5000=y
and lots of others ,also plenty of fimware files for wireless

and also rtl8180 and rtl8187 included :D :D ,i have not connected it appears to be blinkin :D
(im not very optimistik about actually working but who knows )

i tryed module for netcard from 609 is ok for this case
xmms also ok (some lzm i think not working ,reported by others )

this is slax 6.1.1 no doubt really best slax ever :D :D
so just to see if powers down corectly
(for now is fine)

there is also important CONFIG_PCI_MSI=y
to enable to owners of newer ATI gfx , to compile drivers for 3D :D

EDIT:
here is snapshot of slax 6.1.1 in action (has list of wifi driver options)

My experience is quite the opposite. The nVidia 180.22 driver module works with SLAX 6.0.9, but at this time does not work with 6.1.x
When you download and install the driver module you need to restart SLAX for this driver to become active...

I've already tried from that link "nVIDIA-Accelerated-Graphics-Display-Driver-x86-180.44_IA32-slax-6.1.1-kernel-2.6.27.8" but it does not work properly.
However I've found the way to make nVidia 180.22 driver module to work properly.
From Windows I've deleted from my bootable USB the file \slax\etc\x11\xorg.conf
Then copied the slax module "nvidia-driver-180.22-for-2.6.27.8.lzm" to the folder \slax\modules
Restarted the system and booted SLAX from USB and everything works fine!
The above mentioned does not help with the nvidia module posted at your link

Using Slax 6.11 from 4GB flash/USB, booting crashes EVERY time. Same for V6.10; Version 6.09 boots fine from this USB flash-drive. The boot failures include msgs like: "recursive fault..reboot needed"..."starting Sysklogd"...and numbers dump with "end trace." Slax 6.11 boots and runs fine from the CD, and from the CD to RAM.
