Telnet is a traditional protocol to acces remote machines and services from the keyboard. Because of security issues, its use has waned as it is replaced by the use of SSH or other methods for remote access.
However it is still widely used to access less critical special applications and to manage network devices on the local network. Telnet is also used to check manually SMTP, POP3 and other services.
