Slax 7.0.2

I made some experiments with the firefox module which is inside Slax, and I forgot to delete 2MB of useless data inthere so the resulting Slax 7.0.1 is more than 1MB bigger than it should. No harm happens, the forgotten stuff has no side effects at all, it just shouldn't be there. I'm pushing out 7.0.2 right now. If you can live with the fact that the new version 7.0.1 you just downloaded has 1MB of unused data which wastes your precious disk space then there is no need for you to download 7.0.2 since it is the very same in all aspects as like 7.0.1 (minus the forgotten stuff). The new version will be ready in about two or three hours, and I'm not going for any release announcement this time (except of this blog post) since the change is rather cosmetic and doesn't affect functionality.

I didn't notice that 7.0.1 was so big unless I saw that distrowatch listed the release with download link size 213MB - then I realized something has to be wrong, since the previous release was 212MB and I didn't add any big stuff at all. So thanks distrowatch for listing the actual download size :)

I will also publish a diffmod, a Slax Bundle (module) with just the differences between 7.0 and 7.0.2 so everybody who has the older version can upgrade his/her Slax to newest version by just a very tiny download. I'll publish the links here when ready.

First!!

diffmod good news for small download!

A. KADALKA 2012-12-23 20:44

Numbering should be 7.0.1.1 then... :D

Honestly 1 M is something important for those who only have modem or 3G+ or less...
Happy to see that you've decided to put the langage tool so people can download the main distro + lang thing they do want...

Thank you.

Geoffrey 2012-12-23 21:37

I noticed the size went up with 1 megabyte for the 64 bit version (on DistroWatch you can click on older versions). I'm happy this was a mistake! A lot of distro's are just growing in size - without getting better. I hope Slax is different and will focus on a unique and fast user experience.

A.Gorreta 2012-12-23 22:07

Where could I find kernel-source for 7.0.2 ?

Kernel is :

root@slax~# uname -a
Linux slax 3.6.11 #1 SMP Fri Dec 21 22:57:14 AKST 2012 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 370 @ 2.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

But sourcer are :

root@slax~# slax info kernel-source
name: kernel-source
version: 3.2.29_smp
required bundles:
maintainer: Tomas M <tomas@slax.org>
last update: 2012-12-16 02:00:47
categories: develop
size: 77376 KB
description: Linux kernel source
description: Source code for Linus Torvalds' Linux kernel.
description: This is the complete and unmodified source code for the Linux kernel.

THANKS

pistal 2012-12-24 03:51

I downloaded and run slax 7.0.2, but software center says 7.0.1 (32 bit)

Tomas M 2012-12-24 04:06

It's because I forgot to update the version info in /etc/slax-version. Never mind, next will be 7.0.3 and lets hope I won't forget the old version number there :) No more Slax versions in December, I promise :)

Gary 2012-12-24 04:14

Dear Tomas,

It looks like that 7.0.2 doesn't have dhcp client inside. Could you look into it?

Best regards,
Gary

Carlos Felipe Araújo 2012-12-24 04:49

@Tomas M

Im a little newbie (= ubuntu user)

What I need to install and to configure for have in virtualbox full screen like Linux Mint? I'd want to use slax in my imac via virtualbox, but full screen.

And I've a notebook, I'd like install slax in this machine (currently is running ubuntu).

I didn't see any installer or a way (I hope be easy)

Now go rest and enjoy the xmas, no hurry.

Feliz natal!

Tomas M 2012-12-24 04:57

@Gary: checked, dhcp working just fine in Slax all versions.
@Carlos: I don't know virtualbox so I'm unable to help here. Regarding installation, there is no installation, Slax is not a distro which would install to disk. Slax is a Live Linux, its purpose is to be started from removable drive such as USB or CD. Yet you can install it on disk THE VERY SAME WAY like you installed it on USB device (just copy slax folder to it and run slax/boot/bootinst.bat)

localtoast 2012-12-24 07:36

I just got done trying WifiSlax 4.3, then a recent version of Porteus.

Now I feel dirty. I dont know what I was thinking.

Tomas, I'll never doubt you again. I just get impatient without my ATI drivers.

Plok 2012-12-24 09:10

@Tomas M

Can you please make a shell script to activate Slax in Mac?
It is such a pain to have to open up a virtual machine to do it.

Thanks

Hi
i just wont to ask about Slax 7.0.3. Will be a flash player avaiable in this version? I want to use it in a netbook for web browsing.

Thank for your good work

Does Opera web browser work with Slax 7.0.2 32bit? I'm having problems. After making Opera .sb module (using txz2sb tool), putting that module in "slax\modules" folder and restarting Slax, strange thing happened. All desktop icons were replaced with "TXT" icons. I thought that .txz package (taken from Slacky repository) which I used to make .sb module was corrupted, so I tried .txz package from Salix repo - I made .sb module, put it in "slax\modules" folder, restarted Slax and... exactly same thing happened (changed icons to "TXT").

I'm still wainting for gnumeric module and abiword module :)

Robert Jeżewicz 2012-12-24 20:22

@Kmonicek

But flash works fine ex. in Firefox in youtube.

Saman 2012-12-24 20:36

@Kmonicek
As far as we see, latest version of Shockwave Flash is listed as firefox extensions since slax ver: 7.0

@Tomas
I found a xzm version of Opera on the net and according to advises taken in slax blog, I renamed the .xzm to .sb (the easiest conversion of a module that I can do!)

After installation it worked very fine but a mystical conflict happened in slax! (as expected by installing 3rd party modules :P) and slax could not recognize any file extension , for example mp3 and jpeg and png could not be
recognized by their relative programs.
I wonder if you could help me fix the slax in this case.

There is no doubt that opera is not open source software so it can not be added to slax instead of firefox, but it is very straightforward and easily covers lack of torrent and email client in slax without adding any further add-on.
I wonder if you prepare and provide this valuable module in old slax forum.

@localtoast
As for ATI drivers I think that Mark can help you better, also if you checkout old slax forum you can find dozen of ATI drives that are prepared to work with slax 7.

@vic
Mark helped me fix the issue with broadcom wifi, leave your email address in your reply so he will help you to figure it out. (If he finds your post here ;) )

Saman 2012-12-24 20:41

@Hool.de.Nord
Jesus! I have the same problem with the 64x version, in addition slax behaved abnormally!
I recommend you put the source file link here for the attention of Tomas.

@Robert Jeżewicz
:( I am looking for them too so bad also a teamviewer 64x

Alexander 2012-12-24 20:50

@Tomas M: Can make the module GParted?

jcsoh 2012-12-24 21:23

@ Alexander

Go to slax 6 / slax old forum
Em had made a Gparted module for slax 7 (32bits):-
http://old.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=83194

GParted 0.14.0 from Slacky all in one (all deps libs includes).
http://www.mediafire.com/?xkh84xog9zk8vxf

Mark De Silva 2012-12-24 21:57

Actually instead of rolling out a whole new zip, can't you have a section in the ftp for the individual base modules? Then users can just download the particular module that has the problem. Can't do much for the ISO though.

Robert Jeżewicz 2012-12-24 22:20

@Saman teamviewer would great too. And if I could have one, last wish - please make deadbeef module! For me the best music player on linux. Some kind of clone of foobar for MS win :P

Alexander 2012-12-24 22:26

@jcsoh
thank you)

Mark De Silva 2012-12-24 23:24

Robert, the teamviewer deb package can be converted to a slax module with deb2tgz. Or you can use the "other linux" package. Both are actually the windows application run in Linux using the Wine emulator.

Mark De Silva 2012-12-24 23:46

Was I seeing things or did I see a Slax for ARM on one of the download pages?

Liquid Snake 2012-12-25 00:06

@Saman: For people who have problems with Opera, I had problems too. I deleted the files in opera-12.10-x86_64-1_SBo.sb/usr/share/mime/ and the problem was solved.

It is not necessary to delete the subfolders in there. Just the files in opera-12.10-x86_64-1_SBo.sb/usr/share/mime/ (or any version or architecture).

@Alexander: If you have cmake, you can compile the KDE partition manager: sourceforge.net/projects/partitionman

It has no dependencies that are not included in standard Slax.

jcsoh 2012-12-25 00:11

@ Robert Jeżewicz 2012-12-24 22:20

Tomas put in a lot of effort to make slax an easy to use os. You are not going to be able to tap the full potential of slax if you just wait for someone to create modules for you.

It's true some module are complex with a lot of dependencies for eg vlc.
But deadbeef is not one of them (you could at least try). I only heard of deadbeef once , so I just google it.

First google link:
http://deadbeef.sourceforge.net/download.html
I choose to download the ubuntu-deb option as I am running slax remix v09.
From a console deb2lzm sourcefile.deb
Time taken less than aminute.
I am not into music so the only music file I have is some anime sound track. Some file with m4a extension . Dead beef plays it without issues.

Trust me .Between deb2lzm rpm2lzm tgz2lzm txz2lzm etc , you be surprice of the amount of packages /modules you can get yourself from slackware , ubuntu /debian and mandriva repositories.

With wine even some simple window programme is available.

wifi still not working on sony vaio VGN-SZ1XRP (Intel 3945ABG card)

Mark De Silva 2012-12-25 01:47

@Skyther

Download the firmware module:

Open up Terminal and type:

slax activate kernel-firmware

That should solve it.

jcsoh 2012-12-25 02:47

Markds

When you say "firmware module:" , do you mean the one from slax's module repository ?

kernel-firmware Firmware for the kernel - 20.91 MB
http://www.slax.org/modules.php?q=kernel

Mark De Silva 2012-12-25 03:15

Yup that should be the one. It has the intel firmware.

Deloitte 2012-12-25 04:35

Tomas, just a suggestion for 7.0.3:

Could you add more common global keyboard shortcuts like "Show Desktop" and the "Show KDE applications menu"(Start button in Windows), etc?

I've gotten used to navigating quickly in S6 with just the keyboard and would like it if S7 had the same options out of the box.

Thanks.

@Tomas M

Thanks so much for making the buildscripts, it helps a BUNCH, it's so easy to make a module I finnally made one myself!

It would be better to add some documentation on the how but the template does help quite a bit.

Anyways, thank you so much, I appreciate the hard work, I'll get back to making more modules! ;)

Saman 2012-12-25 19:02

@Liquid Snake
Thanks a million, you are right after removing those file now opera is working perfectly!!
Man, I never knew that i have to sb2dir to erase those unnecessary files!
Thinking of uploading this module as it is really essential but do not know how?!

@vic
actually you need to bring this email address to Mr. Mark De Silva (Mark DS) attention.

@jcsoh
I tried the instructions given for making deadbeef, (except that I used deb2sb instead as I am using slax 7 64x) but it did not work even i could not search it in slax!

@Mark De silva
Dear Mark,
I converted the teamviewer .deb which was for amd64 processors.
and according to your instructions after "sb2dir" I found "etc" folder but there were no "init.d", So I made it by myself and moved the contents of etc folder into it :D
Also I downloaded the wine, and after this post i am going to reboot to see if it works.

p.s. having teamviewer is really vital for me as my job is dependant on it I really appreciate if you could help me to run this module

As for k3b,
after using the list of files that you recommend me k3b worked fine but a bad conflict happened in slax and it could not play back any mp3 file!!, please advise!

as for bluetooth,
After using the list of files, and running "bluetoothd" in konsole the bluetooth did not work :s

jcsoh 2012-12-25 22:21

@ saman
When trying a new software and there is no menu entry , extract the module and look inside
/usr/bin or
/opt

If the executable is in /usr/bin, usually it will be in the system path , so when you open a console and type the name of the executable , it will run.
But for /opt, you need to be inside /opt to run it.

The deadbeef executable is in opt , so go inside the extracted sb module , go to /opt and type

deadbeef

After the first run there is an entry in the menu.
There is also a portable version, you can just extract it , keep it in the original extracted folders and run deadbeef from /opt.

jcsoh 2012-12-25 22:26

@ saman

@jcsoh
I tried the instructions given for making deadbeef, (except that I used deb2sb

I think deb2sb in slax 7 is broken . Can other users conrim this ?. I have not manage to convert any deb file . It goes thru the motion , but in the end there is no sb inside.

rpm2sb is working wellusing the one created by em , but the one from slax 7's repository give me 4kb bogus sb. It will activate but if you extract it , it seem to contain /var only.

Rajkumar Poliah 2012-12-25 22:33

This is a great project. I was using Slax for a while then, discontinued as the modules were outdated. Going to get one in pendrive after the module pages are updated. Good luck...!

Manfred Müller 2012-12-25 23:21

@jcsoh:

"...I think deb2sb in slax 7 is broken ..."

You are right - When creating deb2txz I didn't know, that Debian packages sometimes store the package data in data.tar.lzma instead of data.tar.gz.

Thus I was using the wrong widcard.

Please change 'tar xf $SRCDIR/data.tar.?z' in line 46 to 'tar xf $SRCDIR/data.tar.*'

I have already mailed a fix to Tomas, too.

Sorry for that!

Manfred

jcsoh 2012-12-25 23:48

@ Manfred Muller /Quax
In slax 6 , deb2lzm need debian dpkg .
After Tomas implement your correction , how about the need to debian dpkg in slax 7 ?.

Mark De Silva 2012-12-26 00:02

@Saman,

You don't need to download wine for teamviewer. It already comes with wine in itself.

For your bluetooth, is it on? I have tried in on a couple of machines and no issues at all. Do 'dmesg |tail' after you do 'bluetoothd' and see what the output is. Also do a lspci (if your blue tooth is internal but if its external usb bluetooth, do lsusb) and let me see the output. Don't put it in here, send me an email for the output and I'll try and debug for you.

For K3B, try to remove the lame module and see if your MP3s play. Lame is actually optional for K3b.

Mark De Silva 2012-12-26 00:03

@Marvel Bridge

I have a Catalyst 12.10 module if you want to try it. If so, let me have your email address and I'll send you the link to get the module.

Mark De Silva 2012-12-26 00:07

Vic, I've already emailed you with the link to get the kernel module and firmware.

Manfred Müller 2012-12-26 00:18

@jsoh:

In the new deb2txz/deb2sb I am using the 'ar' conmmand from binutils instead of
Debians dpkg. Thus in opposit to Slax <= 6 even on Debian itself there are no
additional packages/programs like dpkg needed.

If used as deb2txz this way the resulting Slackware package contains slack-required,
slack-conflicts and slack-suggests files for slapt-get/gslapt, too.

Manfred

Reposting this here in hopes of an answer:

@Tomas, previously when we activate any modules, if we have scripts in /etc/rc.d/init.d they get executed. This doesn't seem to be the case with "slax activate". Scripts in /etc/rc.d/init.d don't get run. Are we supposed to put them in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d together with the Slax startup scripts? This only starts them when the system boots though.

Ivan Kmeťo 2012-12-26 00:51

Vic, if you have wireless and its working correctly then you don't need any modules to fix it.

I thought your wireless wasn't working. If you have a bcm4312 card, its a firmware issue. If its a 4313 then its a driver issue and you need to get the new kernel. Tomas has already compiled the new kernel and firmware in the 7.0.1 version of Slax.

How to do that? Trying to delete files in for instance /mnt/live/memory/475-djvulibre.sb/usr/share/mime - failed. It says it is READ-ONLY. And I do not know how to mount .sb files to write(-o rw does not helps)

Liquid Snake 2012-12-27 13:09

@FeyFre: I do not know if djvulibre has the problematic files. If it has, you can use these commands:

mkdir /root/module
cp /mnt/live/memory/bundles/475-djvulibre.sb/* /root/module --recursive
rm /root/module/usr/share/mime/*
dir2sb /root/module /mnt/live/memory/data/slax/475-djvulibre.sb

Now, you can restart your system or reactivate on-the-fly:
slax deactivate /mnt/live/memory/data/slax/475-djvulibre.sb
slax activate /mnt/live/memory/data/slax/475-djvulibre.sb

Saman 2012-12-27 21:26

@FeyFre

As for the opera soloution offered by liquid snake, I have to say that I did it but it caused opera crash, to my logic erasing some files from installer shall definitely cause crashes, however If you are still intended to try your chance here is the way please open the Konsole then:
please go to the directory in which the main .sb module is, then:
1. mkdir opera-12.10-x86_64-1_SBo
2. sb2dir opera-12.10-x86_64-1_SBo.sb opera-12.10-x86_64-1_SBo
3. brows into /usr/share/mime/ and erase all files (not folders)
4. dir2sb opera-12.10-x86_64-1_SBo opera-12.10-x86_64-1_SBo.sb

No diffmod yet, so you have to download the whole iso/tar.

alright, thanks for the answer, I will dl it (too impatient to wait for a diffmod...) :)

I want to achieve this goal with my usb flash 32GB:
1. Make 1st partition Ext4 size 1gb
2. Make 2nd partition NTFS 31gb

The goal is to make the 2nd part invisible to windows users, so when the drive is formated 1st stays intact.

Can Slax be installed with bat file on the 1st partition making the whole usb flash bootable?

Mark De Silva 2012-12-28 17:07

The boot loader is installed to the _device_ MBR, so it shouldn't matter if there are partitions. As you can see when you run the bootinsh.{bat|sh}, it says installing to /dev/sdX (X=c,d,etc) and not /dev/sdX{N} (N=1,2,3...). So theoretically, the answer to your question is yes.

@Atakan Çal
there's something wrong with turkish iso (both 32 and 64 bit) despite of good checksums- I try it with the same result as you. I copied folder structure from mounted iso file and then make my own iso file through mkisofs command. Then Slax run good.

First to thank Tomas M. for having the thrill to "create" SLAX. Possibly the very best in this kind of software.
Don't give up. (www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kl1rRxG251s)
Second to let know that the Portuguese version is badly translated, and that is not because it wqas nad by somenone who talks Portuguese from Brazil, it is because is not good Portuguese, and possibly the same person can do better.
Also, what is worse, essential characters doesn't come out from the keyboard to the screen:) For instance these: Ç ç à é ô ã. At least not with some keyboads I tested and normally use to write in Portuguese.
Details on Portuguese alphabet are available at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_alphabet
This way SLAX 7.0.2, or previous, is almost useless in Portuguese version.
All the best!
Happy new year!

NOTE: After all I couldn't send a message with so many errors. Here it goes, slightly better :)

Hi, since the forums aren't up yet, I figured I would ask this question here...

I'm trying to get Slax 7.02 integrated on my multiboot YUMI USB drive, but am running into issues. I installed 7.02 on a clean USB drive and ran the install script and that boots fine, but then I copied the /slax folder onto my YUMI drive and put it in /linux/slax/slax702. I changed the syslinux.cfg file and added the "from=/linux/slax/slax702" cheatcode to it, and it will start to boot up until it tries to add bundles to the union or, if I'm trying to boot to RAM, it will stop when it starts copying stuff to RAM. I'm getting messages like:

ls: /memory/data/linux/slax/slax702: No such file or directory

Interestingly enough, if I'm not trying to boot into RAM, if I do an ls on /memory/data after it craps out, it looks like it mounted the root folder of my USB drive in there. So, instead of mounting /linux/slax/slax702 into /memory/data, it's mounting the whole USB drive instead.

User "DutchKind" had this same problem about 50 days ago and posted in the Slax 7 progress thread, and Tomas said this problem would go away when 7.0 was finally released. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong here, but if anyone has any ideas, please let me know!

Tomas M 2013-01-02 16:54

@bootman: Slax mounts your USB device over /memory/data and then it searches for /linux/slax/slax702 directory there, exactly as you instructed it to do so. If your USB device gets mounted on /memory/data and if you copied slax folder to /linux/slax/slax702 then there SHOULD be this directory and the error message would not appear. So I assume you didn't copy Slax to the directory you mentioned. Remember that Slax is searching for *.sb files in the directory slax702. Maybe you have a subdirectory 'slax' in that directory?

bootman 2013-01-03 06:53

Apologies. Actual directory structure is /multiboot/os/linux/slax/slax702. The error message I posted is correct though...it's looking for /memory/data/linux/slax/slax702, but it should be looking for /memory/data/multiboot/os/linux/slax/slax702. When the linux live scripts kick off, it says that it found slax data on the USB drive, but right after that is when it runs into the errors because of the bad pathing. It's also weird that, when I try to run it in RAM mode, /memory/data contains nothing at all.

Got any more ideas?

Tomas M 2013-01-03 07:17

Well you should use from=/multiboot/os/linux/slax/slax702
If you use copy to ram, the directory /memory/data is unmounted after copying to ram, so it's empty due to that.

bootman 2013-01-04 02:25

Still having the same problem. Here's an example entry in the syslinux.cfg file:

LABEL default
MENU LABEL Run Slax
KERNEL /multiboot/os/linux/slax/slax702/boot/vmlinuz
APPEND vga=773 initrd=/multiboot/os/linux/slax/slax702/boot/initrfs.img load_ramdisk=1 prompt_ramdisk=0 rw printk.time=0 from=/multiboot/os/linux/slax/slax702 slax.flags=perch,xmode

Here's a full rundown of what happens when Live Kit initializes without trying to boot to RAM:

Live Kit init <http://www.linux-live.org>
* Setting dynamic RAM compression using ZRAM
* Looking for slax data in /multiboot/os/linux/slax/slax702 .....
* Found on /dev/sdb1
* Persistent changes not writable or not used
* Setting up union using AUFS 3
* Adding bundles to union
ls: /memory/data/linux/slax/slax702: No such file or directory
sh: cd: /memory/data/linux/slax/slax702: No such file or directory
sh: can't open '/memory/union/etc/fstab' : No such file or directory
sh: can't open '/memory/union/etc/fstab' : No such file or directory
sh: can't open '/memory/union/etc/fstab' : No such file or directory
sh: can't open '/memory/union/etc/fstab' : No such file or directory
sh: can't open '/memory/union/etc/fstab' : No such file or directory
Live Kit done, starting slax
ln: sbin/fsck.aufs: No such file or directory

Fatal error occured - Can't find executable chroot command

Tomas M 2013-01-04 02:32

Well then there must be an error in Live Kit. I'll investigate that.

Tomas M 2013-01-04 02:38

Ah, found it. There is a bug where a regular expression tries to replace path such as /directory/../anotherdirectory to /anotherdirectory, but the two dots are not escaped thus match any character. The /os/ directory on your USB drive causes the bug to appear. Until I fix the bug in Slax 7.0.4, please put Slax to a path which doesn't contain a two-letter subdirectory.

bootman 2013-01-07 06:42

Great, moved the directory elsewhere and now it boots just fine. Thanks!

A. KADALKA 2013-01-09 09:59

@Tomas M

--- "please put Slax to a path which doesn't contain a two-letter subdirectory" o_O
I always put some OS in a single letter subdirectory...
I guess that it will be hard for me to make a new OS with slax according to what you said...

Too bad.

Tomas M 2013-01-09 20:32

@A. KADALKA: that was a temporary solution for the user until Slax 7.0.4 is released, which should happen this week.

Agosh kumar 2013-09-05 22:59

Is there any module built to start up bluetooth with a user interface in slax 7.0.2 ?
