It has KDE4 with many applications from kde network, kde multimedia, kde games, pidgin IM, FireFox, MPlayer and more, the entire system fits 183MB for the 32bit and 188MB for the 64bit variant, and runs perfectly fine on boxes with 256MB of RAM and more. This is most likely the version which contains all the programs for final Slax release. Development tools are still missing though.

Wait, there is more!

Before I show you the download links, I'd like to remind you about the opportunity to get Slax on a cool USB device when it is released. I hope its working fine

I activated desktop effects that were not available, because of OpenGL dependencie. I clicked the buttom "defaults", applied and KDE crashed. After reboot, the KDE was not working, because the configuration was set in persistent changes.

I had to boot without persistency and delete changes.dat file.

Forget the VLC. The SMPlayer is working properly. Are you going to provide a guest account in the final version?

    Tomas M 2012-11-06 07:34

    @Liquid Snake:
openGL not fully supported at the moment. Not sure if that will ever be.

    @slaxnoob:
Actually you should be able to click the tray icon (bottom right of screen) and open network manager settings, configure your IP there. I didn't try that though :) The 4 desktop effect has been removed since it wasn't working correctly everywhere, and it was replaced by application grid switch. I like it more anyway :)

Hi Tomas ... got this latest running frugal near the front of my 1-tb drive -- from go to the kde4 prompt is 28 seconds, far faster than the other kde4 distros I'm currently using. No problems seen so far.

Amazing work! Like ever! Ive tested the 32 bit rc1 iso on usb thumb drive. Everything runs fine even with Nouveau/Gallium driver only. KDE apps are well integrated.

Syslinux 4.06 final is out :)

    Keep the good work...

    em 2012-11-06 09:10

Flash content doesnt play at all in firefox ...?
Perhaps need proprietary nVidia vdpau drivers. Opengl vs xv maybe... SMPlayer is a good player choice.

    Thanx again.

    joshas 2012-11-06 10:18

This is the first version I tested on a real device, Asus 1225C netbook, and to no surprise, the Xorg fails to start. This particular machine has some obscure video chip, that none Linux distro supports, except custom build of Ubuntu, that this computer is bundled with. As a fallback I tried fbdev driver, but it is not available in Slax. Any solutions would be very welcome.

    Internet Only 2012-11-06 10:50

In version 6.1.2 we can boot Slax directly from iso file , copied on a hard disk partition... In slax.cfg I insert 2 lines :
    KERNEL /slax6/vmlinuz
    APPEND initrd=/slax6/initrd.gz ramdisk_size=6666 root=/dev/ram0 rw autoexec=xconf;telinit~4 from=/dev/hda1/slax6/slax-6.1.2.iso
...BUT, in Slax version 7.x how can we boot directly from iso file ???... Reason for this request : old (but functional) hardware without USB port and without optical drive.

    Manuel 2012-11-06 11:30

It works almost perfectly on both my old and my new laptops.
Harddisk, SD Cards, and Audio detected and working.

    But failing for wireless network:

Intel 3945 ABG is shown as "disconnected"
Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6235 detected, Hotspots detected, but fails to connect.

    Jason 2012-11-06 16:20

    Good work Tomas!

But why the RC before creating the devel module?

Also missed your weekly update this time :)

    Modem Manager missing?
Cannot use usb dongle to connect
Any ideas if it will be Included/Fixed

    Tomas M 2012-11-06 20:24

    @Akshay:
please try to install ModemManager from Slackware 14 and let me know if that fixes your troubles. As far as I understood, the modem manager was not necessary to use kppp.

    Stanislav Hoferek 2012-11-06 21:16

Hello Tomas, just a question about the price. How much does it cost in €uros/czech money?

    Tomas M 2012-11-06 22:11

    CZK 500
    EUR 20

    remus 2012-11-06 23:48

I tested in VirtualBox and I hope 'll take care of PPPoE.

    stk 2012-11-07 00:46

Nice, used Slax 6 on lots of shared PCs@ university.

Right now I'm using Slax 7 RC1 on my netbook Asus EEE PC 1015BX (AMD Brazos with CPU C60 and GPU Radeon HD 6290).

It boots ok but no graphical interface (it stays with random colored dots).

I tried several res desides 1024x600, but no luck... can anyone help me?

    Thanks

    Eldes 2012-11-07 00:51

    Hello Thomas :)
I sent to you an email, i hope you could read it.

    Great job,

    Akshay 2012-11-07 00:57

    @thomas

Can you add modem manager in the next build?
Not everyone has wifi or Hardline
Usb Dongles comes handy(if you travel alot)
Its a humble request as it is just 500kb
& NetworkManger is Quite happy with it(all three of my dongles work)
The iso size might just increase 1mb overall but it would make it worth it

    Tomas M 2012-11-07 01:02

    @Akshay:
I'm actually not convinced that ModemManager solves your problem. Is it really needed? When it is there, how does it make things different? How can I test if it's properly installed and working? Does the network manager interface use the modem manager in any way? Thanks

    Tomas M 2012-11-07 01:02

@Eldes: I didn't receive your email. Where did you send it?

    burninbush 2012-11-07 01:05

I would as well like to see support for Modem Manager & Network Manger
Not making the Slax big in size but making it big on features

    Akshay 2012-11-07 01:11

    @thomas

Yes modem-manager enables support for Usb-modems like Haweii & Zte & for phones Too
Network Manger Detects Modems As Mobile Broadband
For access point names 32kb mobile broadband info package is needed too(not a dependency)
If we cannot connect to the internet how can we add or Update? Its a necessity

    slaxeee 2012-11-07 01:13

Hi Tomas, Very nice job for this RC ! But ... do you consider SMB Protocol to be exclude from Slax ? I wasn't able to connect to my NAS or browse the network ( like i could with Slax 6 and Konqueror ). Dolphin just complain with no zeroconf support when i want to add any connection manually.

    Tomas M 2012-11-07 01:17

In Slackware, there is ModemManager package.
Is this the only thing needed?
    32bit: http://slackware.osuosl.org/slackware-14.0/slackware/n/
    64bit: http://slackware.osuosl.org/slackware64-14.0/slackware64/n/

If you download the txz file and install it to Slax using installpkg, is your problem resolved? Actually I have no modem here to test, so I depend on your help here, I need you to let me know what changes are necessary to make the modem manager work for you the way you expect. I don't even know how to use it, or how to check if it's installed properly... yet I'm willing to put it to Slax, if it's useful.

    slaxeee 2012-11-07 01:17

    One more comment :

smplayer is definitively a good choice !
I could test it with mp4, mkv, ... Works like a charm.

    Tomas M 2012-11-07 01:19

Regarding SMB, I can manually mount a samba share using command 'mount -t cifs ...' so the support is there. It is possible that just KDE thinks it can't use SMB, and there are missing tools to browse the network, so you actually need to know what share you want to mount.

    stk 2012-11-07 02:16

@ Tomas M By the way, I didn't mention, but I booted others distros like Ubuntu and the likes and have no trouble with resolution. Hope You can fix this, would like to use Slax 7, KDE rules ;)

i newbie for kde. i try slax-7.0-kde4-2012-10-20-i486.iso and how to setup network manager?

    Sala 2012-11-07 04:19

    Sala

I'll try to translate [13] bbn17's message: "The [Slax7] menue lacks console/terminal" What's more: I'm glad for Tomas' option to chose SMPlayer for Slax7 instead of VLC on the bases of much smaller package size. As a matter of fact, I tried at least trice to propose its use in comments last Sunday from Slax7, but they failed to appear in the list because of the mesages claming that "Incorrectly retyped captcha image" Any way, good luck to Slax7 RC1!

    4hmad 2012-11-07 04:20

thomas, how to fixed the icon tray of network manager in slax-7.0-kde4-2012-10-20-i486.iso

    Akshay 2012-11-07 04:23

In Slackware, there is ModemManager package.
Is this the only thing needed?

    Yes and No
Its a must but the following packages are needed for Functioning properly all are less than a few MB

    modemmanager (0.6.0) or higher
    usb-modeswitch latest
    usb-modeswitch-data latest

    Optional But very Necessary
    networkmanager-(0.9.6.0 or higher)[support for better wifi & 4g]

If you download the txz file and install it to Slax using installpkg, is your problem resolved?

    If i install those above packages(with nm-applet)
    it works like a charm..

Actually I have no modem here to test, so I depend on your help here, I need you to let me know what changes are necessary to make the modem manager work for you the way you expect.

Those packages should do a trick..
if you need any help you can e-mail me i can help you in all possible ways

I don't even know how to use it, or how to check if it's installed properly... yet I'm willing to put it to Slax, if it's useful.

    Thanks..
Really Grateful for people like me who manage
Lab computers(for charity/needy students) & Use Usb modems(cheap in india & Broadband is very costly)

    4hmad 2012-11-07 04:32

okay Akshay, thank you very much for your solution. i will used modem manager from slackware 14 now.

    Not for 14

The rest should do the trick

So can we get a test build? rc2?
so we can test usb modem support?

Fantastic news for my old Armada 1750 :-) I really hope you could put in APM support for ancient laptops like mine (faulty ACPI BIOS implementation). Thanks for your efforts, can't wait to try stable.

    Akshay 2012-11-07 07:09

    @47

    Impact? like what?
    Modem-Manager & nm-applet is way better
as it is more stable & better!
    More support and better

    @Tomas,
slax/boot/bootinst.sh has a typo in realpath command:

I would love it if you could help me out. I've read the documentation on the website but it doesn't have much information on source code or porting. If you are interested in it too shoot me an email on tusharkant15@gmail.com

I just tried the 7.1. I have some issues with Firefox and flash, also I want to add the arduino software plus java but there is no way to make it a module or anything to modify and re-make one. Also tried to post in your wbsite and crashed.

Great work, wireless works like a charm.

    usb-user 2012-11-07 09:32

it is not compatible with unetbootin (linux iso to usb installer) :(

you must extract all files to usb then run /boot/bootinst.bat file under windows.

are we going to get an rc2 with modem manager to test?

    tdmsilvino 2012-11-07 12:36

@Tomas M, I just tested the 64bits tar file. It is working great. It didn't detect my wifi card so I had to install the kernel-firmware package from Slackware 14 and reboot and then it started to work fine.

    Good work!

uget - 500kb download manager & very helpful
LXDE/RazorQT 11mb in total but we can have 2de with great choices
    vlc - 15mb
    modem manager with network manager
add these & we can have a very feature rich setup under 185mb

now that would be a VERY GOOD THING to get more funds and masses of new users for Tomas to continue slax development and you get a shop window on his store etc.

would you make it for a Google Chromebook

    Didi 2012-11-07 22:27

I can't mount my hard disk (or I don't find it ;). I had this trouble with Knoppix before. Mister Klaus Knopper solved it with sudo rebuildfstab -v. But that doesn't work with slax (with or without sudo). Sorry I'm not a computer scientist. By the way: UNetBootin offers to load Slax into RAM. But that doesn't work either. Slax stops at the prompt.

    tdmsilvino 2012-11-08 00:32

@57 You can download the flash player plugin from the Adobe web site and follow the instructions to install it manually. I did that and it works fine. You could also try the Slackbuild script provided in the extra folder from Slackware 14.

    Liquid Snake 2012-11-08 01:13

@Didi: use ls /dev to see if your harddisk is listed there. Otherwise, the kernel did not recognize your harddisk and your only option would be to compile the kernel source code, configured manually for your computer.

If your harddisk is listed as /dev/sda1 and it is formatted with ntfs, for example, you can mount it manually with the commands mkdir /mnt/sda1 and mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1

    Didi 2012-11-08 01:41

@Liquid Snake: My harddisk is listed there. But I use Fedora. So it's not formatted with ntfs.

    Tomas M 2012-11-08 01:45

@Didi: can you see your hard drive in Dolphin (file manager)? If yes, can you see your files if you doubleclick the drive icon?

    Didi 2012-11-08 01:50

@Tomas M: I can't see my hard drive there. That's the problem. I have to leave the office now. I'll be back in two hours more.

    YAFU 2012-11-08 02:24

And what disk are you trying to access? It doesn't see your sda1 partition (first primary partition probably), either there is no filesystem on it or your partition table is somehow incorrect. What data do you have on the missing disk?Existing linux installation?

Furthermore I don't really understand why /dev/loop0 has ext2 filesystem on it. This is incorrect. loop0 should be Slax Core module. That's really odd. It looks like your disk identifies itself as /dev/loop0 instead of /dev/sda1, that's absolutely impossible :) What happens if you mount /dev/loop0 on /mnt ?

    [67] tdmsilvino.

how to fix flashplugin. i download the latest flash plugin from adobe website and install manually but still video not loaded.

    Tomas M 2012-11-08 06:23

    @4hmad:
This Slax version contains the newest libflashplayer available, and it works for me, and apparently for many others. Actually I can't reproduce the problem.

    4hmad 2012-11-08 06:30

what version flash plugin? and how to install slackware package to slax 7? sorry i am new with linux

    Didi 2012-11-08 07:08

    @Tomas M:
On the missing disk there are my own data of Fedora (I would like to use Slax as a rescue system and for my netbook, a small eeepc with 4GB hard disk. I don't want to use the hard disk but a stick). Other Live systems like Ubuntu mount my hard disk automatically.

This is what fdisk -l says. Perhaps it helps you:

    Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders, total 488397168 sectors
    Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 1 488397167 244198583+ ee GPT

    Disk /dev/sdb: 2004 MB, 2004877312 bytes
    191 heads, 11 sectors/track, 1863 cylinders, total 3915776 sectors
    Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x0004e126

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sdb1 * 2048 3915775 1956864 83 Linux

This is what mount /dev/loop0 on /mnt says:

    bash-4.2# mount /dev/loop0 on /mnt
Usage: mount -V : print version
mount -h : print this help
    mount : list mounted filesystems
mount -l : idem, including volume labels
So far the informational part. Next the mounting.
The command is `mount [-t fstype] something somewhere'.
Details found in /etc/fstab may be omitted.
    mount -a [-t|-O] ... : mount all stuff from /etc/fstab
mount device : mount device at the known place
mount directory : mount known device here
mount -t type dev dir : ordinary mount command
Note that one does not really mount a device, one mounts
a filesystem (of the given type) found on the device.
One can also mount an already visible directory tree elsewhere:
    mount --bind olddir newdir
    or move a subtree:
    mount --move olddir newdir
One can change the type of mount containing the directory dir:
    mount --make-shared dir
    mount --make-slave dir
    mount --make-private dir
    mount --make-unbindable dir
One can change the type of all the mounts in a mount subtree
    containing the directory dir:
    mount --make-rshared dir
    mount --make-rslave dir
    mount --make-rprivate dir
    mount --make-runbindable dir
A device can be given by name, say /dev/hda1 or /dev/cdrom,
or by label, using -L label or by uuid, using -U uuid .
Other options: [-nfFrsvw] [-o options] [-p passwdfd].
For many more details, say man 8 mount .

Your sda disk has GPT partitions so the fdisk output is not useful at all. However since your sda3 partition is of type LVM_MEMBER, it is possible that the 'disk' you're looking for is some kind of LVM (logical volume). I'm not sure if Slax can autodetect and autoassemble these.

    Didi 2012-11-08 21:15

@Tomas M: Ok, nevertheless many thanks for your help. Slax is really great. Although I can't use it as a rescue system for my desktop pc I'll use this fast distribution for my netbook. Greatings from Germany.

    Jens 2012-11-09 04:05

I just put it on my USB. It works great, but the problem is it won't recognize my D-Link USB adapter. If I could get a wireless connection going on Slax, I'd highly consider getting that USB stick.

Perfect and beauty system, but it doesn't work with Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n. Try to compile broadcom-sta, but "make: command not found".) What to do? I'm noob..

    Hi guys,

Just a question: Why is New Zealand omitted from the default wallpaper?

    mocabilly 2012-11-10 19:30

    Nice work Tomas!

But, bootinst.sh (extlinux) fails > no error detection

Can you add a error detection in the bootinst.sh file @the extlinux command.

I do agree, most USB sticks will be mounted as fat, ntfs, ext2/3/4 or btrfs, but not all..
In my case (USB partition with XFS) it did not work.

I tested it on several old and new computers in my old job and worked well, less on computers with Intel GMA3150 intel video chipset, where the vesa did not work.
how to boot using intel chipset? tks.

    pacoportables 2012-12-18 05:39

hi all I answered myself, the mistake lay in slax install with yumi which gets v.6.1.2 aka "v.7" in directory multiboot and even redirected the syslinux.cfg well and began to boot, would not find slax their fiheros.sb ... I guess.
solution directly put slax on usb root and redirect the syslinux.cfg or just run script from any window.
    thanks

    pacoportables 2012-12-18 05:48
