I cant fill the survey, maybe its not public.

Wizard57M 2017-11-26 14:17

Can't even read the survey, when attempting to "load document in a new window" I get sent to a Google login page...don't have a Google account, don't want a Google account, no longer use Google for much of ANYTHING. Host the survey page here at the Slax site, or participation will be limited.
As for the new Slax 9 release, I can't use it. I only have WiFi access to the internet, and without WiFi built in, it is a non-starter. I've found Slacko Puppy in the intervening years between Slax releases, and must say for a bit over 200 meg download, it is a very complete OS. I admit to booting Slax 6.1.2 from time to time as well as Slax 7.0.5, just for "old times sake". Thank you, Tomas, for your past efforts, and good luck in future ambitions.

Rajnish kumar 2017-11-26 15:46

Thankyou so much for the new slax.

Tomas M 2017-11-26 17:04

Sorry about that, I forgot to set it as public. Should be working fine now.

Arda Aydın 2017-11-26 19:02

Having to activate the "Persistent Changes" manually made me go back to 7.0.8. I actually loved the design, it ran smooth(1GB RAM, 2.40GHz Single-Core Processor.), I could install most of programs and vice versa.

Also, thanks for not deleting the modules, I didn't saved any modules back then. Just a question: How can I install a .deb or .tar.gz package in slax?

Arda Aydın 2017-11-26 19:32

I forgot to mention that xlunch hadnt saw my newly installed apps - terminal/start works anyways.

Pavlo Kudil 2017-11-26 22:10

Очень хорошая ОС вышла. Именно то, о чем я мечтал и думал.
It's cool!)

Michele 2017-11-27 12:36

This release is interesting because it is minimalist. However I suggest you to add a graphical file manager to explore and copy files over without using a terminal. Some users might be frightened from such a thing (there's xfe that is a lightweight file manager, try to test it and see if you like it). If you would like to keep this release as it is (I'm fine with that) could you please add more documentation on how to customize xlunch and add more icons to the Application Menu? I already achieved that on my own but someone could still have problems with that.
We are very glad for what you are doing. Keep it up!

Cheers

Michele Bucca

Il said : I like it, I am satisfied and I thank Tomas for the quality of his work.
Old user of the Slax, I appreciate its lightness and the ability to easily make a custom live for different uses by putting / removing modules. And I am very happy that it is now under Debian that I know well.
But... it is important to say that Slax is not made for beginners. It's not that easy for current users to do modules. even if it's just a language pack.
For the Slax is less confidential, there must be modules available: languages, file manager, wifi, etc.

Juan De Abajo 2017-11-27 15:50

I'm a fan of Debian linux and find slax very interesting because of:
1. xlunch (it's a great project)
2. aufs in debian
but...
I dont thing it's complete usable compared to old slackware based slax and porteus.
My opinion is that debian base is a great idea for slax and it must keep this way.

Rodrigo Régio de Araujo 2017-11-27 16:12

I really loved the new Slax because all my apps are updated. Better than the older version (i never updated the Chrome or Firefox of the older version). And now is everything going like i wanted on older version.

Tomas M 2017-11-27 20:04

@Michele thank you very much for suggesting xfe. I think this can be added since it is small, if I find a way how to make it use current GTK theme in Slax, because the default theme of xfe is not so nice and the themes available in xfe's configuration seem to change only colors, but nothing else (eg. button appearance etc)

Akiva 2017-11-27 21:19

I like the new slax.
I even played with your linux live script and replaced the core and xorg modules with my own modules: one just for the kernel modules, one for the base system, and one for xorg.
I used debootstrap (cdebootstrap should also work) to create the base module,
overlayfs + chroot for the xorg module.
I have more control what gets into the module this way (no grub stuff,...).
I separated the kernel module for the case, I want to tinker with different root filesystems.

Maybe you can consider using debootstrap for your next release.
It could be easier because there is no need to boot the new system and the process should be completely scriptable.

shevy 2017-11-27 21:34

Hello Tomas,

I actually have not yet tried it. I think you forgot that option in the survey.

Although I do not use systemd, I would try out slax to see how it can be modified. However had, the main reason I have not done so yet, is simply lack of time. I have been very busy in the last ~4 or 5 days with things largely unrelated to linux. Writing protocols, emails, also wasting some time on youtube and so forth... :P

A smaller thing is that, also due to having become older ... (I started using linux in 2003 or early 2004 or so), I am no longer that "fast-moving" when it comes to change. I mean that in genera by the way, not particular only to SLAX. :-)

I used to try out lots of linux distributions in the past, but these days I rarely do so; systemd is only one reason, the other, bigger one is sort of laziness or inertia or both on my part. Anyway, just wanted to let you know - an option for "have not tried it yet" would have helped me. So I did not vote on the survey at all because I would give a wrongful impression.

Marc Draco 2017-11-27 23:09

Really nice work.

I appreciate others saying you should put XXX or YYY on but really, we only *need* a browser - even a terminal and a calculator are luxuries. :)

I can live with SystemD (even though I don't care for it) because this is a portable OS.

If I had one request, it's that you get a more updated version of the Nouveau video driver as the one you're shipping with right now is unusable on the 10x series of nVidia cards and just sends the machine into an "out of range" video error.

That means either a power down or a case of CTRL-ALT-DEL like a crazy person until SystemD counts eight (?) presses and takes the hint that I really need to reboot. This is a pretty minor issue of course since most of the machines I'll be targeting are won't have such exotic hardware.

Marc Draco 2017-11-28 00:59

Oh, just another thought (I've already wowed a couple of my friends with this)

It would look absolutely gorgeous on a Raspberry Pi - although I don't know how much work that would be!

François Lavoie 2017-11-28 01:41

Interesting minimalist system. Though xlunch does not seem for me very intuitive. Do you intend to develop it similarly to the plank dock?

What about a general receipe for the user to be able to build his own basic modules under debian? Could it be as simple as the script you have made for chromium?

The decision to go for debian because of the available package pasture was a wise one.

Thanks for this new slax version.

walt 2017-11-28 07:12

I Don't like it because: 1. Obviously it is stepping back to the 198X, now, nobody will use console and learn commands, so it will newer works for mass adoption. 2. someone says it is not for beginners, and I have used Slax since ver. 6 but was not able to figure up how to work with new ver. at all!
3. really inconvenience to do anything, lack of any file manager, lack of graphic support for imbedded soft, like screenshot, instead of icon, need run command.
4. NO any guide! Their some commands, but nowhere list of these commands I can find!
Instead of make new version better and better, more convenient, etc., make reliable site, with supporting info, use best from old versions and rid of obsolete, all going wrong direction.
Remember old 6 vers., site with forum? This was the Best one, till today I use it! the only problem, all modules not available any more, no updates and no any support.
The next ver 7 was worth, lack of modules, no support, no chat or forum, but at least it was stable and supported graphic interface.
And now this cutoff degradation, without any way to use by normal people, no any guide, no support.
Thomas, You are genius programmer, but nothing understands what people need!
This project already about 10 yrs old and still only little group use it.
You need to make site reliable, like old slacks, so people can communicate, you need to make a step by step guide, not just for professionals, but understandable by normal people, you need make interface friendly and easy to use.
And for now, the new version is unusable for 99.9% of people, sorry.

Tomas M 2017-11-28 07:40

@Akiva
Thank you very much for debootstrap, I didn't know such thing exists, this will surely make my life much easier now :)

@Marc Draco
I am not sure what GPU cards you have, but I tested on Nvidia 1070 before the release and got no problems at all. Nevertheless I am not sure how to update nouveau drivers on their own anyaway, I just install what Debian provides. Furthermore I have to admit that I have no intention to compile own drivers.

@walt
You are correct that new Slax may seem like a step back. Slax always tried to include the latest and greatest KDE, thus providing full featured, best at that time, desktop to the users. But that is now different, Slax serves as a minimalistic base for all the users who want to make their own stuff (modules). Slax currently contains: 1) file manager (mc), 2) screenshot program (just hit PrintScreen key to generate screenshot), 3) xlunch to run command (do not click on icon, just type your command and hit enter!) :-)

I fully agree that there is a need for better documentation, to let users know about all the non-obvious features you can still use even if it looks like there is nothing icluded. I will write some docs in several days.

Ernest L. Townsend 2017-11-28 11:36

What about uefi boot? Slax won't boot on modern uefi systems from usb. Any suggestions?

Ernest L. Townsend 2017-11-28 14:05

What about if we transfer the iso to usb using YUMI UEFI? https://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/

There is a link to beta version at the bottom of the page...

Another other solutions? Maybe a tutorial how to manually do it would be nice...

Or a ready made iso with uefi support? That would be the ideal.

I love the new Slax in all its simplicity... you install what you need without the extra bloat. I have created my own sb files with the software I use and now I have my own customised distro based on the great Debian :)

Keep up the good work with Slax...

Helder Max 2017-11-28 19:36

I Like it, but not 100%. ALMOST there. When networking (WiFi) app is available out of the box, then I think it is ready for everyday :-)
But I'll use it anyway :-D

other Tomas 2017-11-28 21:10

I am still using old 64-bit Slax 7.x from USB, however web browsers are not fully supported (no TLS 1.2 support in original Firefox, missing language packs in newer Firefox package). Worked great with Core2Duo/Sandy Bridge machines. Tried also on Haswell laptop and it has very limited sound support (only after start, no sounds in web browser/smplayer).

I tried new Slax in virtual machine and I am missing following tools:
-language packages (czech support would be nice)
-calculator
-rdesktop
-openvpn
-Dolphin or other GUI which allows me to work with USB disk drives (I don't want to mount /unmount each disk in console).

Helder Max 2017-11-28 21:48

Thomas, what about modules?
I'm trying to load them in my running ISO, make new ones...
Is this possible in 9.2.1 or we are advised to use APT only?

calm 2017-11-29 04:31

Hello Mr. Matejicek.
Slax is an old pal of me. I got it since 10 years ago. A complete desktop OS from a card-cd. Thank you to take your time to bring it again to the light. There are any chance you create a new/spin version using the Trinity desktop but keeping the 200 mb size? Trinity desktop is a complete desktop with a perfect file explorer plus some good apps. Maybe keeping only the konqueror file explorer and some system tunning utilities it could be not that big.

https://www.trinitydesktop.org/

Thank you.

Ernest L. Townsend 2017-11-29 09:32

@Helder Max - About user modules, just boot clean slax, apt-get install the module you want, use slaxchanges and you get an sb file with the module and all its dependencies

@Tomas M - any help re: UEFI boot please? I looked in Knoppix and it boots well on UEFI systems but had grub integrated... can we have an iso like that please? Or at least an updated boot directory to download... thanks

lucbertz 2017-11-29 10:50

Regarding Mr Calm suggestion, a Slax based on Q4OS (a distribution with Trinity and Debian Stretch based) should resemble the "old school" Slax ; it could fit the needs of many users.

I'd like to apply Linux Live Kit on Q4OS, but I'm quite sure I will not get it working.

Ernest L. Townsend 2017-11-29 14:19

@Helder Max I meant savechanges not slaxchanges

Helder Max 2017-11-29 17:45

@Ernest L. Townsend Hi there. Got it. Thanks for the tip.

Tomas M 2017-11-29 21:52

I do not have any UEFI hardware here so I cannot test, I am sorry.

Maffeo 2017-11-29 23:12

So happy to see you continue developing Slax! I was a slax user a long time ago and fell by the wayside as my needs changed.

I like what you are doing with it, and have tested the 9.2.1 build successfully, but it is still lacking for me and is not usable for my purposes yet.

First thing is there needs to be clean and clear documentation on usage. Most importantly how to add applications to the menu, and how to make modules. My goal is to make a "build" that has the apps I need, but then can be booted thereafter without needing persistence. I don't need much, just WiFi support, a file manager, an FTP client and maybe RDP/VNC client.

Ideally it should have WiFi Support of the box since so many machines these days are laptops and wired network connects are becoming less common. In my case I am prohibited from using wired at work (only work-supplied machines), but am allowed to use WiFi all I want. But I realize that might not be doable while still keeping the distro light as possible.

Za Xandros 2017-11-30 05:56

I am satisfied with its goodness
my suggestion is to "improve documentation".
For example following documentation articles can be written:
1) can u give a step by step article, by which i can produce a customized (some packages added) .iso image of slax

2) can u give step by step in a blog article by which (given the linux-live scripts https://github.com/Tomas-M/linux-live and given the debian iso ), I can compile to slax .iso from scratch by myself

Ernest L. Townsend 2017-11-30 11:18

@Maffeo and @Za Xandros - About user modules, as I have previously posted here, just boot clean slax, apt-get install the module you want, use savechanges and you get an sb file with the module and all its dependencies. Then just copy the sb file to the slax folder on usb and it will be loaded automatically during boot.

I have already created my own customised slax usb using this method ;)

To customise the fluxbox menu, just go in the root folder, find .fluxbox, make the necessary configurations there and use the method just explained for persistence

Ernest L. Townsend 2017-11-30 22:05

@Tomas M - how do I remove the text editor and calculator that you included by default in slax 9.2.1? Normally I use bc and vim so I do not need them. Thanks.

shamimur rahman 2017-12-01 01:09

How can I use slax 9.2.1 as pxe server?

Za Xandros 2017-12-01 10:50

Thanks @Ernest L. Townsend. That will work for usb pen drive.
But for CD, how to make bootable .iso file out of this modified slax ( sb file added)

Ernest L. Townsend 2017-12-01 13:24

@Za Xandros - try this https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/90793/create-iso-image-from-folder-via-terminal-commands

Should work from a linux terminal...

Make sure you do not mount the usb pendrive though before creating the ISO...

Good luck

Maffeo 2017-12-01 14:40

Thank you Ernest! I was able to do most of what I wanted with your instructions. Of course, it would be preferable if I was able to get that information from official documentation instead of a blog comment, but I must be patient.

brock 2017-12-02 00:39

Is it possible to disable PAE. I have an AMD Geode lx800 and it will not boot because PAE is not present on the CPU.

eionmac 2017-12-02 14:21

1. Thank you for all your good work Tomas.
2. I used old SLAX to introduce folk to Linux, and as a bootable CD to allow them to get on line when their 'Windows machines had problems.' With the modules it was superb!
3. With some folk I teach (voluntary teaching at a local library to introduce 'Seniors' to computers, I find a CD on their old computers (Non UEFI) to be a most useful thing as they can browse and use web based email without doing any harm to the computer.
4. Like other I would like ability to star CD with Wifi as many laptops and places do not have wired Ethernet. available.
5. Please take my utmost heartfelt thanks for all your efforts to create a small bootable Live Linux.
6. PS I have successfully used the new SLAX on old (about 2004) Acer (Pentium single core) and Dell (about 2015 with i7 cpu intel graphics).

Akiva 2017-12-02 14:23

@brock

You can create the necessary files with the following script: https://pastebin.com/pebgsR37

If you feel trustworthy enough I uploaded a zip archive, that I already tested with virtualbox.
http://www27.zippyshare.com/v/cVARlx69/file.html

Had a typo there. So you have to rename vmlinux to vmlinuz in the boot folder.
Just replace initrfs.img and vmlinuz in boot folder and copy 00-kernelmodules.sb into the slax directory.

Rafael Alcocer 2017-12-02 17:04

Need :
File manager
How do I add software with Debian
How do I modify Desktop Background
how do I add Printer,my own software with icon links

I like you have gone with Debian but there is so much missing how do I get it, your documentation is for Slackware

Ernest L. Townsend 2017-12-03 07:13

@Rafael

1. how to add software - open terminal window, apt-get install <name>, savechanges to create a sb file
2. modify desktop background - open terminal window - go to .fluxbox - make any mods there - you have to refer to fluxbox documentation online
3. add printer - install cups and manage your printers there - you may need the ppd file for your specific printer
4. add software with icon links - refer to point 1 + go to /etc/xlunch and edit entries file. You can open it using any common text editor - I suggest Vim though

Guys, keep in mind that Slax is ultimately Debian Strecth now so before posting any queries here, refer to the extensive debian documentation online... I think Tomas M did a great job with making it a modular system...

milton perez 2017-12-03 23:50

hi Tomas Slax-debian is very cool!
you can try apt-get install Grlm-debootstrap have some features post-chroot-scripts inside-chroot-scripts after-chroot-scripts etc.
thank you.

Rafael Alcocer 2017-12-04 13:45

Thanks ernest , After installing xfe for a file explorer I noticed the the /mnt directory in not populated by default so I can't browse the other storage devices I added the empty directories to mount and mounted the /dev to /mnt, is there a way to do this automatically, also i guess that xlunch doesn't update automatically.

BTW I used Debian a long time ago and Slackware and Debian are two different animals I have always used slax until it went into hibernation and then went to Porteus, Coming back to a completely different system which is web based and no GUI is quite a shock but I will get over it once I master it.

Thanks for your reply,

Juan De Abajo 2017-12-05 19:57

Just to remind, there's also the old slax scripts for sb images:
1.To extract your 0X_something.sb to a directory:
sb2dir 0X_something.sb /directory
2. To compress a directory to sb:
dir2sb /directory 0X_something.sb
3. to activate an unmounted .sb:
slax activate 0X_something.sb
4. to deactivate it:
slax deactivate 0X_something.sb

so you can add some new changes on an existed .sb by extratcing it to dir using sb2dir command and copy/replace all contents of a new .sb.
You can also create installations of some debian applications, keep them in another place of /slax and /slax/modules and activating them if you need them.
I've packed this way palemoon, midori, chrome and some apps like network-manager, wps-office, master-pdf-editor, kodi etc.
Some of their packets I used are not included in debian repos, so I'm not sharing before i test them for a long.

Rui Monteiro 2017-12-06 11:55

Python module fails, it gives the following error:

Sorry can-t copy from the terminal ooops!

in a nutshell says libpython2.7.so.1.0:cannot open shared object file...

Please make the system more usable and less minimalist!

Federico Damián Schonborn 2017-12-06 18:26

I like the idea of using Debian as base as it saves you a lot of work and we can access all of its repositories, but I prefer to have a full desktop as Slackware-based Slax had instead of the current selection because it saves a lot of setup. Maybe you can make an alternative ISO? The desktop does not need to be Plasma (I think all we know how heavy it is storage-wise), maybe XFCE?

naEX 2017-12-07 10:30

why not make Slax more user friendly? I don't mean with preinstalling bunch of bloatware, but simply create "shortcuts" for installation (apt install...) generally most used apps. Or maybe better put in slax lite software center like in lxde.
:)

Maffeo 2017-12-07 21:25

I hate to have to ask for help here again, but I have exhausted the various Debian wikis and help sites. None of them work for this issue.

I've otherwise had a great time with this distro on 4 different computers (even changed my survey response), but on the final one, an Ultrabook laptop, I can't get sound and the applet in the lower right doesn't load. I have found the reason why, but can't fix it.

To explain, it has two PCI "sound cards" (or at least it thinks it does), which are an Intel HDMI (used for a port on the back) and an Intel HD Audio (the actual internal sound card). The ALSA system recognizes the HDMI as the default (Card 0), which of course means I get no sound from the speakers or headphone jack (Card 1). To add to my frustration, both "cards" are using the same module, "snd-hda-intel," which means most of the tutorials and methods for changing which "card" I'm using don't work. I also noticed that the tutorials speak about certain alsa config files, but they are not located in the folders they direct me to.
So, any help?

PyCuK 2017-12-16 05:20

Greetings from Russia !
A very useful operating system !
Tomas M. continue in the same spirit !

Tomas M 2017-12-25 10:35

@Maffeo, it is possible that you are missing firmware, try current Slax release, maybe it helps.

Kevin 2018-01-16 16:55

I have been using Linux for 2 years now! I can tell you this is what I consider Linux to look like. I love this Distro! Debian was the right choice here! This is awesome! Please keep it up!

thank you!

Kevin 2018-01-16 21:27

Rafael Alcocer,

I have been using this distro for one day now, and I can tell you how to install packages simply. Go to the terminal, and type:
su <enter>
apt-get install <package name> then <enter>
or
do to Debians package down load site, and download what ever you like there.
then
first go to your Downloads folder, and then
open terminal again and type:
su <enter>
dpkg -i <package name>

Note:
I suggest you first take care of your dependencies by opening the terminal and typing:
su
apt-get install -f
then you can go to the top of this post and do what I posted here.

Hope that helps. It should work fine for you!

Kevin 2018-01-16 21:29

typo: I mean "go to Debians Download site."

Kevin 2018-01-16 23:41

I wish I could edit this here! I wanted to update my last post. anyway, To: Rafael Alcocer, again. when you update dependencies for the programs you download from Debians site, run apt-get update first, then apt-get install -f. I'm not really sure what order to run these, as apt-get install -f was a new discovery for me yesterday also. at any rate, run these commands: (I think in this order)
download package from Debian for your machine architecture. (32bit) or (64bit)
then
type apt-get update (in terminal of course)
then
type dpkg -i <package name>

If anyone know better, please clear this up.. Peace!

Kevin 2018-01-16 23:43

and last but not least,
apt-get install -f
(I forgot that one) sorry.. lol

Kevin 2018-01-21 02:24

Why this Distro is a great idea!! You are getting an APT (Debian) Linux system that is as small as you will find in an APT system! Awesome! And best of all, You only need to copy TWO file over to your flash drive, hard drive.. etc... unbelievable! The concept is perfect!

Wiktor 2018-02-10 14:13

Hello.

1. It's possible edit modules in SLAX, for fast change something ?
2. When SLAX exist on hdd, I can not add startup script ( crontab -e ) - not work.
3. How change password for root and create new user ? ( not work )

Sorry for my english
