International support for Slax

Slax 7 will be available in more than 50 languages, see the following table. The first column, locale, means system locales from /usr/share/locale/XX/, where XX is for example "cs" for Czech. The second column, keyb, means keyboard mapping code from /etc/X11/xkb/rules/base.lst.

Please check it to see if your language has correctly selected keyboard mapping and locales, so I could possibly fix it in the list. Also, if you language requires special font, please mention that in the comments, so I could add it, preferably use font from Slackware's repository. Thank you very much.

There is a locate conf for latinoamerica? something like latam? you know for the keyboard...

Tomas M 2012-11-24 09:21

@kamikaze:
please specify your country and language, so I could be able to look into those two locations (mentioned in blog post) for your keyboard mappings and locales. Thanks

Manuel 2012-11-24 13:52

@kamikaze
@Tomas:

Hi: I also use it in Spanish for Latinoamerica (latam)
setxkbmap -layout latam
(es-latam)

Michele B 2012-11-25 00:45

How can I check it to see if my language has correctly selected keyboard mapping and locales? I'm italian :)

Tomas M 2012-11-25 01:30

Well, there are no other available options for Italian, so your setting is probably correct :)

Bokuno 2012-11-25 01:56

For a long time I didn't use English though, I'd like to thank you for providing Simplified Chinese support.Though I don't know exactly how this will be.Will Chinese Input Method also be supported then.Thank You!

Tomas M 2012-11-25 09:19

I was able to put Chinese support there (Traditional as well as Simplified Chinese). But I'm unable to make the input work, I'm only typing english letters. But it's maybe due to the fact I have a regular keyboard, I have no idea how chinese people could type so many characters using a keyboard anyway :) So I'll need help in this from some Chinese user.

kamikaze 2012-11-25 12:24

I live in Venezuela...
Thanks Tomas
I'll try as Manuel wrote then I'll write it
Thanks Manuel

Hi,
Reliable IME support for East Asian Languages has often been a problem for linux.
If you just want to occasionally type in Chinese, but still have the rest of your system in English, then kinyin might be a good solution.

kinyin.org/

also see

www.slax.org/modules.php?action=detail&id=2508

for a module for slax 6

and

www.slax.org/forum.php?search=kinyin&searchtype=all

for relevant discussion.

If you want complete Chinese IME that will even allow typing into a terminal, I don't know what to recommend.

rrbert

PS I can also recommend the font wqy-microhei

Hello,
I'm a user from China and I want to recommend one of the best Chinese input called iBus
here to download,
code.google.com/p/ibus/
Also I recommend the font called wqy.
download here,
sourceforge.net/projects/wqy
Thank you Tomas and the best wishes to Slax

rrbert 2012-11-26 05:57

ibus looks very promising and seems to support:
Japanese (anthy)
Traditional Chinese (chewing and pinyin)
Simplified Chinese (pinyin)
Korean (hangul)
There is a qt version,
There are (slightly out of date) slackbuilds available.
However I haven't tested it.
re the font, wqy-microhei was a collaborative effort between wqy and google, where they made various optimisations for web readability etc. and is about half the size, but still has about the same number of characters.
A module I made for slax 6 is 1.7 M

Marius 2012-11-26 06:03

Thank you for Romanian support! I use Slax since version 5 and I have to say it's my favorite alternative OS. Good work on the latest version. Regards!

Tomas M 2012-11-26 07:04

I'll add wqy-zenhei font for Chinese users. Furthermore Slackware provides some software for chinese input, it runs fine in Slax, but I'm unable to test it since I have no idea how to type chinese characters using my english keyboard.

rrbert 2012-11-26 09:08

That would probably be scim, arguably the oldest and most complete IME for linux.
The main problem it had was that if you updated your X libraries, or some other components, then it could silently fail, with no error messages.
Inspection of the source code is like looking at ten year old spaghetti.
However, if it is working on the current system, then it's probably OK. It is the most widely deployed IME for linux.
PS hitting the keys Ctl-Space will switch between 'Chinese' mode and 'English' mode.

Thanks guys you have done a good job. Well done

aitap 2012-11-28 08:45

Can you please make all non-latin languages have switchable keyboard layout by default? For example, all of Russian users do have at least two layouts: "ru" for nationa characters and "us" for "computer stuff" (like addresses, shell commands, etc.).

Tomas M 2012-11-28 10:56

Yes there will be an icon in the task bar, and when you click it, you'll switch between US and the international mapping.

Missing Be for Belgium.

Really looking forward to the final release, this is an awsome distro in the making.

mocabilly 2012-12-02 22:11

Adding Be for Belgium would "be" ;-) nice & very much appreciated

Tomas M 2012-12-02 22:35

The problem with Belgium seems the same like with Switzerland - people in your country are speaking French, Dutch or German. It is thus not possible to support "belgium" translation of Slax.

Tintin 2012-12-05 07:29

Thx for the response.

Personally i only use English as the os system language, i hope the azerty keyboard layout could be included, as Belgium is one of the few countries that still uses it.

Cheers.

Tintin 2012-12-05 07:30

Forgot to mention.
I don't know how much the French keyboard layout differs from the Belgian.

Shark 2012-12-23 22:45

i dont get why qwertz keyboard is switched to qwerty layout switched z and y i try use both console loadkeys la-latin1.map or from gui(keyboard KDE control module) select either uk or us lang and still no change, does it even download directly into iso file for other language packs or do i have to recreate iso like with power iso editor),... why when using or testing live boot cd?
will there be flash, java, silverlight, ,opera, chrome support, in newest slax 7.01 and up? how bout programs apps...

Noor Latif 2021-07-14 21:32

In the latest Slax version you change your keyboard language with this command:
slax loadkeys se

replace se with the keyboard code found on the top of this page.
se, in this case, stands for swedish

Noor Latif 2021-07-14 21:32

I meant loadkeys se

Noor Latif 2021-07-14 21:41

This is embarrassing. I confused the commands.
It should be: setxkbmap se
Sorry about that!

#libertad X 2021-10-07 02:45

Hello, sorry but I am not good at English.
I am using "Deepl Translator"(https://www.deepl.com/translator).

I have a usb with mbr.
I created two partitions.
one ext4 and one fat32.
in the first one I put slax.
in the second one I put the files needed to have grub.
I put the following entry in grub:

menuentry "slax on sda1"{
insmod ext2
insmod syslinuxcfg
set root=(hd0,msdos1)
syslinux_source /slax/boot/syslinux.bin
syslinux_configfile /slax/boot/syslinux.cfg
}

I had already run the bootinst.sh file as well.
works fine and all.

but I would like to change the language and keyboard layout.
I have "latin american spanish".

how can i do this from the terminal?
