Slax 7.0 released
I'm happy to announce the final release of Slax version 7.0, code name Green Horn. After more than three years of silence Slax is back in action and is better than ever before. Also the website got updated, so make sure to check www.slax.org, you'll love it.
Slax 7.0 is the major update of Slax Linux live operating system. It includes newest Linux Kernel, KDE4 desktop, GCC compiler and lots of other stuff and that all in just a ~210MB download. Furthermore it's available in more than 50 localizations, so you can get a Slax that speaks your language.
Big thanks to everybody who helped with development and testing. The work didn't end now, actually it rather just started, I'm going to prepare Modules section for the website and bring Software Center in Slax to life. The next step, however, is to start supporting buildscripts. Slax is ready, just the webserver needs some work, I think I'll start with this.
If you are experiencing slow download, you may consider purchasing Slax on USB drive, just check the home page and order one, it's awesome device! :)
Enjoy! And thank you once more for using Slax.

Dobrá práce Tome, dÃky za vÅ¡echno co jsi pro nás (milovnÃky slaxu) udÄ›lal
Good job Thomas, thank you for everything what you do for us (slax lovers)
Regarding flags ... please explain to me how should I know what flags are correct for Catalan, Valencian, those are not mentioned at the given URL at all. Thanks!
Catalan is http://lacortada.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/catalan_flag.jpg
Valencian http://0.tqn.com/d/gospain/1/0/Z/H/-/-/valencia_flag.gif
I've just made md5sum test file, it can be found here:
http://ftp.slax.org/Slax-7.x/md5.txt
Congratulations,EXCELENT job ,very nice ,but I have problem with smplayer (play slowly) I have a netbook with atom 450 1gb ram .Sorry for my poor English .Repeat, thanks for you dedication ,slax is a jewel of operation systems.
@david: smplayer is by default set to use x11 video output, which works everywhere, but is slower. Please change video settings to use XV video output instead of X11 and it will be faster.
Sorry to bug, but is there I should go about installing wifi firmware with this release? I followed some instructions that I found here (http://old.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=82732) and was presented with "FATAL: Module lwlwifi not found."
I must love it like others :)
Arabic flag is here, http://icondrawer.com/img/flag_icons/Arab-League-flag-icon.png
Disregard that issue. I got it working by just copying the firmware files I needed and rebooting. No bash commands needed! Loving the distro, by the way. Congratulations!
doigte: Your network card probably requires another driver, not the iwlwifi, which is for Intel cards. You can find which wireless network card you have by executing the command "lspci" (or maybe there will be some information in the output of dmesg command - try executing "dmesg | grep -i net").
seems that there is a bug in the stripped down firefox:
After opening some windows in firefox (e.g. Help, about) one can't close
the windows because the windows buttons are missing.
Trying to close the window with a rightclick on the taskbar entry freezes Slax.
Screenshot at http://fluxflux.net/firefox.png
Nevertheless: Well done, Tomas !
Manfred
Regarding FireFox, it is not stripped down, there is just an oxygen configuration set to hide window title, and an addon installed in firefox which adds the missing buttons to the tab bar and makes the window draggable by holding the tab bar.
I can confirm that the About dialog doesn't have window title. Anyway pressing Esc key closes it. Unfortunately I wasn't able to reproduce the freeze after clicking Close on the taskbar.
Congratulations for the release, Tomas! The new blog design looks very good.
I will download Slax 7 when I get home.
Thank you very much!
Thank you tomas. Excellent work - years of hard and alot sleepless nights. Wow looks great. I LOOK FORWARD to your slax software center and future updates. Happy holidays... get some rest.
Good work Tomas. Videos, wifi, sound working properly.
As far I try no big problem I found, the problem small is when use Firefox for browsing Slax freeze randomly (maybe 0.5 to 2 seconds), but working fine after that.
Wating for strip down LibreOffice Module under 100MB, trying to txz2sb LibreOffice ~alien build the size 108 Mb, but not working at all because missing something
BUGS
!!!!! I deleted changes.dat from FlashDrive (do this by file manager Dolpin), but file (or his ghost) still taking up space :(
Delete slax/07-ffox.sb from flashdrive, reboot, but firefox label still in start menu.
Firefox double click at adress or search bar - window changed size; when window expanded (full size) - click on top panel (where tabs) - it will be restored. Im new in Slax, pls tell me someone where i can find stuff like f package manage for wiew, install, uninstall packages? (i want to make own module by editing exists) What tools for working whith modules .bs?
My opinion - this OS is still raw and unfinished
PS sorry for my bad englsh)
when i attempted downloading both the .iso and the .zip file, a smaller file was downloaded. both files appeared to have all of their content but didnt run when i tried booting.
also, the bootinst.bat file didnt work when i tried opening it (in Windows XP Prof.)
Any help would be most apprieciated
Please put checksums, i download 3 times one file and, get different checksums
@ peter86
Read the 7th post from top .Tomas gave the link to the checksums.
Tomas , there doesn't seem to be a make_iso.sh or bat ?
Is this feature not supported /included in slax 7.
Hi Tomas,
Congratulations for this 7th Slax Opus !
You did it and give it in time.
Just some comments about this new site version.
- There is no blog history, so we can't access older pages.
- Not sure Requests will be appropriate to receive all users query. You should consider a bug report page and "officials" answers.
- Consider adding a search item too, because you'll got a lot of followers and without any forum, newer fans will spam your blog with always same questions
When did you expect give us a first release of Slax Internals ebook ?
Downloaded Russian 32 bit for USB is corrupt. Can you, please reupload? Thanx!
@jcsoh: thank you for answering other user questions.
make_iso.bat is not yet included. I was thinking about it too since I needed it at least once myself as well :) So I will probably add it there. It needs some other stuff though, mkisofs and cygwin, it will make Slax 1MB bigger or such which I didn't want for the initial release, 212MB is yet too much already :)

Why is Slax 7 code name "Green Horn" ? .Isn't it a bit negative since a Green Horn refers to someone who is fresh and new and have yet to master the trick of the trade, whereas, Slax 7 is "proud" product of evolution since Slax 1 ? (Was there a Slax 1 ? ). I only see a Slax 2 in Slax's mirrors).
It should be name "Golden Horn" or at least "Silver Horn"!
Regarding download speed, I'm moving some of the downloads to different servers transparently, so it should improve over time.
Regarding code name, greenhorn as a single word is something else than Green Horn as a two words. See google images for green horn :)
well dome Tomas M!.....good to have Slax back again with KDE4. waiting for some cool modules and software center for Slax, hope module section of new website will be available soon.
@Citadel
I tried, but the PPPoE connection not working. I know the user and password, but the PPPoE connection require more steps than know the user and password.
Regarding download, there was an issue with max clients limit on apache, it's now fixed. I'm sorry for the problems.
See google images for green horn :)

Wicked .....
'Green horn' on google returns a lot of images for me - from caterpillars to stuff which is not really legal in most countries ;)
Congrats for the release, also the new web looks very nice and clean.
Problem! i just create a bootable USB using Slax 7.0, it boots ok, but can't get Desktop yet, only a black screen after loading vmlinuz........... etc.
i boot with default options:
persistent: Yes
graphical desktop: Yes
Copy to RAM: No
what's the problem?
i even tried to boot (using iso file) using virtualbox under windows host, same result. no desktop coming, only black screen. My system is:
Notebook (AMD Athlon Dual Core, 2 GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon HD)
plz help.
Thank you, guys! I'm loving slax! Please, enable p2p downloading, any torrent please.
Be uber cool when the modules page is up and running. Looking forward to trying it.
@geek: if you are a super hot women then let me know your phone number and address, else ... well .. else remain silent ;-)
Trying to download, but taking forever, after 2 hours 130 mb, dropping to 6kb/s, sigh.
And what an insult to Belgian folks, lol. Going for the English version instead.
Cheers.
DÃky za skvÄ›lou práci ! Doufám, že sponzoÅ™i jsou také spokojeni a že máš Äas i na svou rodinku :-)
Hodně štěstà a chuti do práce, užij si svátky :-)
a method to install Slax in hard disk like a regular linux distro will be great, Slax 7.0 is awesome! i'm thinking about using Slax as primary linux distro (dual boot with windows 8), for that, i need to install it in hard disk...
@Abhi:
Take a look at http://old.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=83043
As long as your Windows8 hasn't been installed in UEFI mode you can use SInA.
It has been proven to work today.
Manfred
Second time it has stopped now on an 1+ hour download when the download has 1-2 seconds left. It will run for a few minutes before it times out saying that the remote machine closed the connection. Please add mirrors, thanks.
been using heavily customised mint KDE(earlier KDE CE) as primary for about 8y and slax for 3y on all other comps in live mode, will change to slax7 as soon as download completes. if KDE experience is better I might replace it as my primary & only OS (of course after the requisite modules are available...
Thanks a lot...
please set up a torrent for English language(not all only one) so that any one can test it and download it fast ?
i found a post about installing Slax into hard disk: http://gr8idea.info/os/tutorials/slax/install.html
will it work for Slax 7.0? i can run Slax from FAT/FAT32 partition but persistent size will be limited to 4GB, so i want to boot slax from a hard disk partiton (size 15 GB) formatted in ext4, i have windows 7 installed too, so i need to install grub for dual boot. can anybody provide me with any guide to do that?
i know once slax had an installer called slax-installer or something like that for this purpose, what happend to that?
No problem downloading, nice and fast. Manual install on an old P4 test box multi-booting with Xubuntu,Zenwalk,Vector and a bunch of frugal Puppy installs........ everything basically good out of the box.
Hi, I love Linux operating systems based on Slax (the other one being Porteus). I really appreciate your wonderful work you put into Slax 7.0. By the way, Porteus has a great install to USB-Stick program that one can use directly from the CD (hint, hint :-D !), therefore, there's need to download a separate ZIP file. By the way, your current downloads are extremely slow and stopped suddenly that I have decided to give it a rest.
The new Slax looks more "grown-up", and is very, very and beautiful, but there's one thing that doesn't seem to work yet. I tried watching a video file or listening to an audio file, for that matter, from iba.org.il/media and smplayer can't handle it. It would be great if you could find or post a solution. In Porteus all I had to do is to assign gnome player handle it, and that was it.
Will you also have Skype and Gparted for Slax? These are basicially the only other two programs I miss (I like to keep my Slax based distros lean and mean). Thanks.
providing generic slax with additional language module pack can reduce total bandwith usage :p
@FlyOut: not at all. If the user is going to download Slax 212MB + Language 3MB then the download size is 215MB. Compared to 215MB of ISO bundled with the language, it's equal.
@Manfred
There is no forum in slax at this level of discuss.
(No link could be seen)
So when you ask someone to read a forum it's a non-sense.
At this time i haven't not seen any links about any forum...
Tomas M should put a link somewhere in this page.
(if he would like to be seen as more professionnal)
Cheers.
@tomas, Oh I agree
but If we need to Install secondary language and already have Slax English, only 3 MB download.
@FlyOut
I totally agree with you in that point.
In fact, if Tomas would like salx to be known, he should create the ability to take the language .sb file for people who tries English release and then are happy to have 3 Mb to download only.
A good strategy is to put the most important languages such as German French Spanish English and Chinese for example in a special distro.
@Tomas M
1/ As I said the other day, there's no burn GUI software.
Many people may want to use slax but most guys don't know how to burn a CD with command line.
At least put pburn...
2/ The forum should be accessed va a link in the above menu at least in the doc area.
It's the best way to say that your distro is a serious one.
3/ NO hibernate or suspend to ram button ?
This is something I do recommend, because I've seen many people that really need that kind of features that all the distros I use have.
Only yours do not.
4/ At this time, I use slax in VirtualBOX, so I do not know if wifi runs appropriately or not.
The other days I said that it doesn't.

@Kadalka
Since you obviously don't comprehend that all the Slax sites are being redone I saved you the trouble of using a search engine
http://old.slax.org/forum.php
@Mr. Obvious
I'm a slax user so I know how to handle a forum.
You can see me there:
http://old.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=81991
I ca say, that you don't understand my discuss:
It's not about a geek user, it's about someone who would like to use a distro [slax].
He needs to know where the forum is for example.
There is no link about a forum: this means that may be no forum exists.
A professional website have got a forum, slax does not have any, officially.
He it does then a link should be seen IN the MAIN page, not in an hidden place.
As I sum it up: it's not about me, it's about the best way to convince people to use slax.
There's no reason to use slax is no forums exists...
Please, before you write, think...
@Tomas M @Mr. Obvious
I've used Ubuntu and then switch to Linux Mint because there where some lacks of features in Ubuntu.
Who knew that Mint will be first in the past ? No one.
Now Mint is the First distro.
You could not be first without good features, forums, etc.
That's it.
Very nice! Can't wait to try it out (downloading now :-D)
Keep up the good work, and thank you!

*sorry for all my mistakes*
will we be able to build our "own slax flavour" in the site like in previous versions and download the custom iso? like without kde, with gparted etc...
@Kadalka
i don't think tomas aims to be in the top 10 distros. slax is very specific.
tomas said he will promote a nw kind of "discussion threads", no forum atm, it's under development
Sorry I'm late!
Congratulations!
I will try it as soon as possible.
Thanks!

"i don't think tomas aims to be in the top 10 distros."
If "popularity" or "ranking" is Tomas priority , the any regular forum users can tell , the two most common request / complaint is for /on:-
(a) To provide a gui based hard disk installer
(b) Better wifi support
By the way Tomas doesn't care for Distrowatch rannking.
Thanks for producing this. I've been using Slax for five years. I think it's the best and most stable OS I have used.
very nice!
german edition works fine! ...with support of the german umlauts (äöüß)
thank you
The flag for galician language is : http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c0/Bandeira_galega_civil.svg
Thanks for your good job!
Forgive me if I've missed it, but how does one add modules while the modules page is under construction? The loading into RAM and and the ease with which modules can be added is surely the grabber of this distro.
Thanks in advance - and, again, apologies if I'm missed something.
Looks very good. The 32 bit cd boots and seems to be fine.
The 32 bit USB also boots and seems to work. Firefox works well.
2 days ago the downloads were slow 12 to 90 KB and disconnected alot but eventually worked and the md5 matched.
Yesterday I downloaded the 64 bit zip from the same link as before and it downloaded around 1 MB and was fast. Good luck with the rest of what you're
trying to achieve.
I had a failed download effort yesterday. Failed at 3.1mb. I will try again. Maybe use a download manager.
"i don't think tomas aims to be in the top 10 distros"
So do I...
Despite what I said in the previous line, in THIS comment, a distro should aim to be in the first top 10... :-)
What I want to point out is:
if you would like to have a good distro (technically speaking), not the best ranking, you need to have good tools.
People won't flock to help you to improve your distro if tools are not ok.
That's it.
NB: Slackware is the best in my point of view and it is not number one at all anywhere.
Dziękuję, Slax 7.0 jest świetny!
Gratuluję i życzę powodzenia w dalszej pracy.
Pozdrowienia z Polski :)
Hi again,
I managed to download the ZIP file this morning. Two issues that I have found are Smplayer can not play any Windows files, .asx or .asp files. Wireless connection is in memory however, it fails to reconnect automatically after reboot.
Thanks
Slax 7.0 official release stops during boot process after looking for slax data - lots of dots then process stops with hash prompt on next line.
Version is 64-bit (64 bit computer with 4 Gb RAM) and I have tried iso file using unetbootin as well as zip file using extraction then successfully running /boot shell script before rebooting. Same result each time.
I am really looking forward to using slax again after so many years in hibernation - actually i feel like that too :). Seems to combine the slickness and flexibility of distros like puppy with the visual appearance and access to sophisticated applications found in main stream distros like fedora which I have on other computers.
Very well done Tomas and thanks for all yours efforts in reviving Slax as a transformed being, but without loss of identity :). I know you must be very busy at the moment and so I shall be very patient for an answer - perhaps someone else can help?
My wireless (Intel 3945ABG) works only after creating sb from kernel-firmware-20120804git-noarch-1.txz. And then reboot, so it is only viable from a flash drive.
By the way, after disabling the MicroUtilities extension in Firefox, the min, max, close buttons on the whole window disappear. Even deleting the hidden folder .mozilla/ does not fix this. Not even downloading from firefox.com fixes this. At least File -> Quit still works.
Overall, it looks nice.
justdeath: Yes, the buttons from firefox disappeared after disabling the MicroUtilities. I wasn't sure, what's wrong, but now, when you mentioned it, it is suddenly obvious :-).
I was talking about this once before, but there is also problem with doubleclicking the address bar (to select the text) - it causes the window to maximize. It should maximize only by doubleclicking the window decoration. This problem occures only when the MicroUtilities addon is enabled.
Wow, I'm late for 2 days. Tomas, thank you for this wonderful job, my life "linux" can be divided into before and after of Slax, a complete operating system, ready to use and fully customizable, the version in Portuguese of Brazil was perfect, I have learned a lot from him and I am very happy with this new version with everything that's new. Again, thanks Tomas and thanks to everyone who helped and help this wonderful job.
Powered by Google Translator... =P
I'd like to suggest a change to the command prompt, from the default "bash-4.2#" to something more useful. How about PS1='\u@\h:\w\$ ' as seen on Slax6, Ubuntu, etc. ?
@Pocci: you expect me to know how to do that, right? :) If you provide proper explanation what file should I change to make the desired modification, I'm more likely willing to do that.
extra ordinary kde 4.9 in just 210MB and its live . its really good to see the devotion towards kde now puppy linux comes in 160 MB
Tomas M: Here is my .bashrc file from Gentoo, where is the prompt set to user@machine and the terminal has colors (ls and other commands have colored output): http://disk.jabbim.cz/kovin@jabber.cz/bashrc
Add the extra dot to the filename and put it in /root/.bashrc location. This is for one particular user, if you want to do it system wide. put the file to /etc/bash/bashrc (that's from where I took it from my Gentoo). But Slax has only the root user, so /root/.bashrc is good enough :-).
Hmm ... Generally I am seriously impressed by the expertise that went into creating this 210 MB KDE 4 distribution. Practically, after trying out the Slax 7 ISO on my netbook by booting from a physical, USB-connected, external CD/DVD drive (and not doing much inside Slax 7 except for looking around a bit), on the next boot Windows 7 claimed to be damaged and to require a restore from the last checkpoint. This, of course, should not happen at all. I cannot completely exclude the possibility that I may have done something inadvisable during the few seconds that I was trying out Slax 7. I also have no desire to repeat the test (putting my data at risk), and will therefore confine Slax 7 to a virtual machine from now on, Nevertheless, should more reports of dual-boot problems with Windows come in, then I strongly recommend to take them seriously.
Re my previous post the 32-bit version stops when booting in the same way as the 64-bit.
Excellent work with Slax .. Congrats. I have a question How did Firefox buttons that were next to the tabs?
Further to my previous posts, Slax also fails to boot in the same way on my samsung NP300 laptop. Incidentally, checksums had been successful.
Has anyone been able to boot successfully with any of the Slax 7.0 English (UK) versions?
Other live usb distros such as the latest Puppy and Fedora have been successful but I would prefer to use Slax.
There is no forum or thread to ask this question but does Slax 7 support the "changes" functionality of Slax 6 - e.g. store persistent changes on a separate device?
Excellent work, Tomas ! Thank you very, very much , and congratulations .
I became aware and started using Slax 6 some 2 years ago , but some problems with my hardware (wifi, audio) and modules installation made me gradually stop using it to attend some needs. Now I gave a try with Slax 7, and , wow !, everything worked perfectly from start. It put me back on the track of becoming a Slax adict .
Take a well deserved rest and have a wonderful end of year .
Answering Johnl , question just above my post :
This is the best improvement , in my opinion : you don´t need to specify anymore a readwrite device at startup . Slax 7 recognized automatically that it was booting from my USB pendrive and saved all changes , in wallpaper , etc. Awesome !
@rpguerra :
I know and that's great. I was playing with it last night. :)
Maybe this falls under "advanced" but with Slax 6 I could boot slax of a usb device but the changes file could be on a separate device like an external HD or locally with a PC (e.g. a changes file on a Windows partition).
When I used Slax I customised the install and added stuff like the latest version of gnome, other drawing tools. It's always practical to boot using the "from" parameter and a copy of the install on another device. The ability to have the changes file separate was useful.
Slax 7 doesn't support changes on a separate device yet, currently there is no ETA for this feature.
Regarding Windows 7 complaining to get corrupted, always make sure to shutdown Slax properly, do not just hit Reboot button, since if you accessed (mounted) your windows partitions in Slax, those are marked as in use and need to be properly unmounted during normal Slax shutdown.
Further to my previous posts, I have now got Slax 32-bit to boot on a fat32 partition, however brtfs doesn't boot on either 32 or 64.
Thanks for your reply Tomas.
That means I'll roll my sleeves up and get hacking.
I don't suppose there is any technical issues you're aware of that prevent this from working?
Well done Tomas. Slax is great alternative to other Linux distros
@johnl: actually I think the only task needed is to parse kernel command line and properly mount the given device as changes. For Slax it is a bit different, since there has to be error handling for the case when the device doesn't exist, has bad filesystem, refuses to mount, etc etc, with appropriate fallbacks ... that's a bit more coding ;)
تم تنصيب الاصدار النهائي على جهازين على القرص الصلب ونسخة اخرى على يو اس بي
شكرل توم
I was trying to sell such stuff few years ago and make ZERO sales. So it's not worth
@Tomas M, as requested by @Pocci to change the PS1 variable you can edit the section "# Set a default shell prompt:" in the file /etc/profile.
Further to previous posts re booting problems, I have now 64-bit slax working on ext2 partition. Without trying the whole range of formats, fat32 is also OK, but brtfs isn't.
@Tomas M, I connected my notebook to the TV via HDMI, KDE opened up the System Settings to set the screen size for both the TV and the notebook screen. I watched a movie and when I disconnected the HDMI cable my notebook screen is set to the correct size but all the letters in the KDE windows are very small. The font size in the task bar are ok with the correct size, but the font size in the windows' title, in the Firefox address bar and in the KDE's System Settigns are very small.
@thomas M,
Hello, I have a bug report to make even though it's not really a bug... When I try to set a new password for root and force slax to ask password at boot, it won't recognize the password... I have an azerty keyboard so I assume this is where the problem come from, but even when I try to type the password as my keaboard was a qwerty, it doesn't work either (keep saying my password is wrong)...
Thanks for Slax it's great ! Keep up the good work ! Have a nice week-end !
@ Tomas M, Congratulations on such wonderful work. down the final version 7.0 release of Slax I have installed the hard disk, NTFS file system and create an entry to grub, works great with updates included.
Thank you very much for sharing your work.
Tried installing per directions in "Slax on USB device", but boot installer does not work.

Incredible job!! Can someone (Thomas or someone else) please explain to me how you can fit all of this on such a small size iso when everybody else (except the minimalist scene) needs 700MB or more..? I think people should learn from what you are accomplishing in Slax!
Hi, I've Broadcom BCM4313 Wireless Adapter on my notebook. Which package should i download and install from Slackware's packages?
Excelente noticia! muy buen trabajo. Tengo una disto basada en Slax 6 en español y que uso en todos mis computadores. Es hora de actualizarla. Espero poder colaborar.
Felicitaciones y gracias por tu trabajo. Good job!
Hi there, it looks great and also works great :-)
In the past I worked a lot with the old slax, but this looks so much better and is fun to use ;-) Thanks a lot!
Just a quick note to say I received your SLAX USB key today here in the UK.
It works perfectly and also looks very cool!
Using Slax just now to send this message.
Now the fun begins (going to add some persistence modifications!)
Thanks for all your hard work Tomas.
:)
Hello tomas. We have been discussing a lot about the automount of partition in slax 7. Could you do something about that. Even a modification of the fstab will not survive a reboot. Or do you propose a turnaround for those who would like to automount the partitions.
@francois.e: Actually the automount is not needed if you use KDE, since in that case partitions are automounted when you access them in Dolphin. If you on the other hand use text-mode then you surely know how to mount your partitions manually.
What are your particular needs? Why do you need the partitions automounted at all? Please describe, so I could better understand your request. Thank you.
Hi Tomas. Imagine you boot slax7 on a multi-disk machine, you must write some notes, so you open ie kwrite, punch something on the keyboard and want to "save as" your file; at this point, the panel opens on "Documents", which is part of the changes.dat file; but you keep your things in another folder on second disk. in the present way you must scan the disks to identify what is the second disk and choose the right place.
Just one of the situations.
Take a look please at the old forum, there is a thread about it.
I am not visiting the old forum. I understand the situation you just described, but in my opinion your conclusion is wrong. If the Save As dialog appears, and you are in the Documents folder, you should see a hotlinks to your hard drives (even if those are not mounted yet) at the left sidebar of the Save As dialog. There are few links such as "Home", "Network", "Root", "Trash", and under that there should be your drives listed. As soon as you click the drive it mounts automatically and you're able to save your files there. If you're missing them then it needs further investigation with 'blkid'.
One scenario, when you need automounted partitions, is for example music collection in Juk. You have to mount the disk manually first, or Juk won't be able to play the music. That is just theoretically speaking, I didn't try that, it's just an example.
@Prcek
Well, not theoretical at all.
@Tomas
Yes, it actually shows partitions, not drives, listed by meaningless partition sizes; in such environment I also have 3x160gB drives, all three shown as "160 Gb hard disk" or whatever is shown in each language. The problem I reported in the old forum rises in a situation similar to the one described above by Prcek. I would like to switch to slax7 this little Nas/dlna server but the sofware I successfully used before doesn't work, simply because none of the partitione listed in each configuration file is found.
In few words, so as it is, you can't use a machine with unattended boot or, that was my goal, even without monitor and keyboard, controlled only by remote desktop.
Seems to be a udisks2 issue perhaps, definitely Slackware 14 based issue.
http://igurublog.wordpress.com/2012/03/11/udisks2-another-loss-for-linux/
Lots of complaints about udisks2 which seems to be more catered for commercial gnome than anything else.
People use linux with the command line. If Dolphine doesn't detect the drives, they don't get mounted. So if you run slax with out the GUI (one of the options at bootup), then the user is stuffed having to mount all his drives manually, provided they know which drives are which. This, together with negating priority for naming for the internal drives, is a step backwards for linux for everyone.
Speaking of GUI at boot up, last time with slax 6 we used to be able to execute command from the kernel boot parameters (?exec=xconf;startx), is this gone now or have I just missed it in the new docs? What exactly does the "xmode" slax parameter do? Is it in the initrfs or in slax (I can't find it)?
Also will Slax 7 support PXE in later releases like it used to?
Slax 7 not scanning wireless network. Its says using iwl3945 disconnected. What is the problem. I tried wicd module but no help.
Help to resolve issue or guide me were is the problem.
@MarkDS:
PXE is not planed at the moment.
xmode parameter gets into action in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/Slax.02.startup
udisks2 is not included in Slax. There is udisks (probably version 1).
Thanks Tomas. I thought I saw udisks2 in /var/log/packages - must be too tired and seeing things.
Thank you for your work on the new version of Slax! May I ask, how would you install the USB version of Slax onto a thin client type of device? It has flash memory as a hard drive along with RAM. What is the default file system type for the Linux install?
Remy Copy the contents of the slax to the flash disk and run the bootinst.bat (if the flash disk is formatted for Windows NTFS - Fat32 doesn't work for me for some reason, I have not investigated further) or bootinst.sh (if the flash disk is formatted to ext2/3/4.
Running live, slax is on aufs. I have installed it in frugal mode (as described above) on a hard drive formatted to ext4. Also I have installed it as a full Linux on a hard drive formatted to ext4 and ext3.
Neeraj you need the firmware. Try and use a wire to get internet to the machine and then search for the firmware module and activate it using the command in the command line:
slax activate kernel-firmware
After that remove your wifi module and reload it:
rmmod iwlwifi
modprobe iwlwifi
When you do the rmmod, if it complains it can't remove the module because of some other module that needs iwlwifi, remove that module first then remove iwlwifi.
I have tried lilo with UUIDs and it works fine. However the moment you plug in a usb drive/thumbdrive the whole thing fails again. It reports that it can't find the root device and asks to have the correct root defined and even tells the user which are devices available and lists them as /dev/sda1, /dev/sdb1, etc (with the external devices listed first instead of the internal hdd). The UUID section for all the devices is all 0s, ie: "0000-0000-0000-0000". All this while I have been working on my Core 2 Duo machines for development.
Then on a hunch I decided to boot Slax on my newer i5 and i7 machines and I discovered something funny. On the i5 and i7 machines, the internal hard drives are always detected FIRST unlike the Core 2 Duo machines where the external devices are detected first then the internal hard drives.
As Tomas mentioned the order of devices is kernel controlled since it is assigned right at bootup, but why the discrepency with older Core 2 Duo and newer i5/i7 machines? Bridge issues? If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
Hi Mark,
Thanks for your help. I just downloded kernel-firmware module from slax module page and it worked without doing anything else.
Are you from INDIA?
Thanks again.
i just tested the latest 32bit release and found that firefox is not opening up rest everything looks great.
regards
Asking again, which module, or package to covert, should I install to use BCM4313 wireless adapter?
Ahmet, you need to download the new kernel and firmware. I'm not sure if Tomas has already created the modules for these based on my comments but I have recompiled the kernel and created an updated kernel module which works for users with the 4313 wireless card.
is there any solution to make Firefox works.
can i try to reinstall it.
what package i need and from where i get that.
regards
Compiling kernel? Umm, I used to download and convert Slackware packages for Slax 6 :D Isn't there another easy way to do it? :D
At the moment you can download Slax 7.0.1 or newer, there is the suggested change already compiled in kernel (Broadcom SoftMac support, as kernel module), so you will hopefully no longer need to recompile kernel, just install the firmware module, which you can actually do through the Software Center icon at Slax desktop.
Can anyone help me to install skype in slax 7. I have downloded linux version from skype website its in tar.bz2 format. How to install and run it.
how to convert any linuz package to slax 7 compatible package?
@Tomas >>> ... which you can actually do through the Software Center icon at Slax desktop.
Irony is that I need an internet connection in order to connect to the internet :)
I think I gotta download kernel-firmware from Modules page. I'm gonna try this one with latest Slax version. Thanks :)
Will older modules for Slax 6 work with Slax 7?
And will Slax 7 support PXE booting?

Hi Tomas :)
Ä°'m very happy for you released slax 7. i'm from turkey and thank you very very much for this. :))
and i want to ask you a question how i can install slax with my windows ? i want to use together slax and windows.
sorry for my terrible english
No matter how I try, I cannot get persistent changes to work on my eeepc 701 nor on my eeepc 1000. I'm using a 4GB usb drive. For example, I boot (with persistent changes asterisked, not copying to memory), change something (e.g. add a panel to the desktop), shutdown and boot (or just restart) and it comes up fresh. It doesn't remember wi-fi keys, KDE settings, Firefox history - nothing.
There's no changes.dat on the usb drive.
Everyone else seems to be able to use it. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
I have the same problem:

I have not been able to boot slax on my home computer. It works fine on the computer at school. when I try to boot from a USB drive at home. The program loads and then I get a blank fuzzy green screen and can do nothing.
Just a question, i did the dual boot processing using EasyBCD, it works, having the "slax" folder in C:, but when slax boot, i get the login screen, i did the username and password things, got the Linux Kernel 3.2.. note but thats it, it doesnt lunch the KDE...

Great Linux distro.
Can you help me though installing it on a VirtualBox machine hard drive.
I can boot it from the ISO but is there any permanent installation to save our changes at rebooting?
The purpose of this is to test it completely and installed it on Wyse Thin client instead of Windows 7 Embedded version.
Thanks for your support in advance.
